Two Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, two Kestrel, c.50 Skylark, ten Meadow Pipit, Pied Wagtail, nine Common Stonechat, 22 Redwing, Greenfinch, eight Chaffinch, ten Goldfinch, Yellowhammer, >.300 Linnet, c.200 Corn Bunting and three Raven.

 

Monday 20th

Grey Heron, Mute Swan, several Mallard, several Common Buzzard, four Kestrel, Merlin, c.200 Golden Plover, a mixed flock of c.1000 gulls most of which were Common, Tawny Owl, Stock Dove, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, three Pied Wagtail, at least six Common Stonechat, c.200 Fieldfare, several Chaffinch, several hundred Linnet and Corn Bunting with small numbers of Yellowhammer.

Monday 10th

c.80 Fieldfare from Shirehill Lane, ten Lesser Black-backed and two Black-headed Gulls from Tormarton Road, Sparrowhawk in the Shire Valley and 20 Stock Dove from Rushmead Lane. (John Barnett)

Reported today: Two Common Buzzard, two Kestrel, eight Skylark, 12 Fieldfare, five Redwing, four Common Stonechat, three Pied Wagtail, 91 Corn Bunting and two Yellowhammer.

 

Sunday 16th

A single Grey Partridge this afternoon, just to the west of Rushmead barn. (John Barnett)

 

Thursday 20th

Some birds at last! Two Kestrel, 21 Golden Plover in fields opposite Marshfield School. On Rushmead Farm; c.140 Stock Dove, c.120 Skylark, c.70 Yellowhammer and 25 Meadow Pipit. (John Barnett)

 

Thursday 27th

This afternoon; Male Blackcap in a village garden three calling Greenfinch from different places near the village church. Two Common Stonechat from Rushmead Lane and one from Middledown Lane. A pair of Treecreeper, five Grey Heron and c.280 Fieldfare in the Shire Valley. (John Barnett)

Very wet and windy on Down Road this afternoon: Common Buzzard, Kestrel, 11 Stock Dove, Skylark, c.60 Linnet, Yellowhammer, Corn Bunting and two Raven. (Pete Coslett)

Sunday 1st

Combined reports: Two Common Buzzard, three Kestrel, c.50 Lesser Black-backed Gull, Common Snipe by Broadmead Brook below Middledown Lane, several small groups of Stock Dove, c.12 Common Stonechat (two West Littleton Road, two Rushmead Lane, two Northfield Lane and six from Middledown Lane), plenty of singing Skylark, many Meadow Pipit, 20+ Yellowhammer, 45+ Corn Bunting including singing birds and a few lingering Redwing. Thursday 5th

A Merlin over Down Road this afternoon. Also 25 Pied Wagtails and two Common Stonechat from Rushmead Lane. (John Barnett)

 

Friday 6th

Two Red Kite over Rushmead Farm. Around the patch, c.150 Lesser Black-backed Gull and a similar number of Common Gulls plus a few Herring Gulls, good numbers of Common Buzzard in the warmer weather, and finally... the return of the Little Owls! (John Barnett)

 

Sunday 8th

Combined reports: A Marsh Tit was seen in the Shire Valley. C.100 Chaffinch and Yellowhammer from the Down Track area including lots of Continental Chaffinch. C.220 Linnet from Rushmead Farm. 30 Yellowhammer from Northfield Lane also Common Buzzard, two Kestrel, six Skylark, two Meadow Pipit, nine Pied Wagtail, 15 Fieldfare, 12 Corn Bunting, 30 Starling two Raven and a single Golden Plover in fields opposite Marshfield School. Combined reports: Grey Heron, three Mallard, four Red Kite (two from Rushmead Lane and two over Shirehill Bridge, several Common Buzzard, two Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, c.50 Lesser Black-backed and 20 Herring Gull plus a few Common Gull, c.20 Stock Dove, good numbers of Skylark and Meadow Pipit, several Pied Wagtail, at least four Common Stonechat, several Common Chiffchaff, several Raven plus small numbers of Linnet, Yellowhammer and Corn Bunting. Tuesday 17th

Loads of Common Chiffchaff at Ringswell plus several Greenfinches around. (John Barnett) News from the patch of up to three Short-eared Owls in an area with no public access. They have possibly wintered in the area which is best viewed looking south from Shirehill Lane. Do not enter the fields - there are no public rights of way! (TBOSG)

 

Wednesday 18th

Combined Reports: Two Short-eared Owl, Red Kite, three Common Buzzard, Kestrel, lots of Corn Buntings singing including one in the Shire Valley! Up to 100 Yellowhammer in various areas, 60 Linnet near Down Track, 35 Fieldfare on West Littleton Down and a further 50 in the Shire Valley, 33 Stock Dove, five Northern Wheatear on Rushmead Lane and Rushmead Farm, lots of Common Chiffchaff in Shire Valley and scattered elsewhere, good numbers of singing Skylark and two Raven. Combined reports: Shire Valley - Grey Heron, male Blackcap, four (two pairs) Mistle Thrush, Kestrel and a few Fieldfare. Two Canada Geese still on West Littleton Dam but no sign of any Northern Wheatear and it seems that all the Common Stonechat have gone. Combined reports: Red Kite over Down Road also Kestrel and three Common  Buzzard. 50-60 Golden Plover over Tormarton Road. (Pete Coslett) Several singing Common Chiffchaff and Blackcap south of the village. Four (two pairs) Mistle Thrush, Red Kite and Goshawk from Ashwicke and Sparrowhawk from Ringswell. A mixed flock of c.100 Chaffinch and Yellowhammer also c.60 Linnet and c.50 Golden Plover between West Littleton and the Shire Valley and two Canada Geese still on West Littleton Pond. Combined reports: At least eight Common Buzzard, Red Kite, Sparrowhawk, 200+ Lesser Black-backed and Herring Gull, 10+ Sky Lark, 12 Meadow Pipit, five Pied Wagtail. two Common Chiffchaff, two Common Stonechat, Corn Bunting, two Short-eared Owl, three Grey Heron, several Blackcap, a couple of Fieldfare, c.60 Linnet , c.60 Yellowhammer, 40 Chaffinch, two Canada Geese and good numbers of Greenfinch in the village. Shire Valley; Little Egret, three Grey Heron, Mistle Thrush, Corn Bunting, several Common Chiffchaff and four Fieldfare. West Littleton Down; Peregrine and 30 Fieldfare. Sunday 29th

A Bullfinch calling to the south-west of village, a couple of Redwing and around 30 Fieldfare in the Ashwicke area. C.90 Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gull from Northfield Lane and lots of Skylark singing north of the village. (John Barnett)

 

Tuesday 31st

In the Shire Valley; Marsh Tit, three Mistle Thrush, five Grey Heron, singing Corn Bunting, Redwing and two Canada Geese new in on the second pond. Two Canada Geese on West Littleton Dam and 70 Herring/ Lesser Black-backed Gull from Middledown Lane. Generally lots of Skylark singing and increasing numbers of both Blackcap and Common Chiffchaff. APRIL 2020

 

All reports this month are from John Barnett!

 

Wednesday 1st

C.250 Fieldfare near Ashwicke and nearby in the trees 100+ flock of Fieldfare and Redwing, also singing Mistle Thrush. A pair of Canada Geese on Church's Pond with two still on West Littleton Dam. Also two Kestrel on the patch.

 

Thursday 2nd

The first ever record of Common Scoter for the patch in an unprecedented nocturnal movement across the area. Several groups of birds were audible as they passed over Marshfield Village! Also today; c.70 Redwing, Swallow (the first of the year), two Mistle Thrush and Kestrel at Ashwicke. C.80 Linnet plus loads of Skylark singing everywhere on Rushmead Farm. Common Stonechat and good numbers of Blackcap and Common Chiffchaff singing from Orchid Lane.

 

Friday 3rd

Two Lesser Redpoll at West Littleton with Goldfinch before they flew off, two Canada Geese still on the dam at West Littleton and small numbers of Fieldfare on West Littleton Down. Also several Meadow Pipit around.

 

Saturday 4th

A Whimbrel was heard calling (four times) at it flew over Middledown Lane late afternoon. Two Canada Geese on West Littleton Dam and two still on Church's Pond along with two Grey Wagtail. C.40 Linnet and c.40 Yellowhammer were noted on West Littleton Down and three Kestrel were logged.

Sunday 5th

Two Northern Wheatear on Rushmead Lane, two Canada Geese on Small Pond in the Shire Valley along with four Mistle Thrush and two Grey Heron. Two Mistle Thrush plus a few Redwing and Fieldfare at Ashwicke, c.70 Fieldfare at Ringswell, several Great Spotted and Green Woodpecker calling and drumming south of the village early morning as well as two Swallow.

 

Monday 6th

Two Canada Geese still present on West Littleton Dam, 45 Fieldfare on West Littleton Down, Common Stonechat from Orchid Lane and Swallow over the village.

 

Tuesday 7th

Two Little Owl at West Littleton and two Canada Geese on West Littleton Dam still. Two more Canada Geese on Small Pond in the Shire Valley, two Mistle Thrush and a Goshawk heard calling from Gunnings Wood. A White Wagtail was seen in horse paddocks from Rushmead Lane, Swallow from Northfield Lane along with several Meadow Pipit. A Tawny Owl mobbed by small birds at Ringswell; Swallow and three Willow Warbler around Ringswell Dew Pond.

 

Wednesday 8th

Hobby over the east end of the village this evening also two Swallow at Ringswell Dew Pond and seventeen Fieldfare south of village. Common Stonechat at Orchid Lane.

 

Thursday 9th

Two Canada Geese and Grey Heron on West Littleton Dam and two Swallow at Ringswell Dew Pond.

 

Friday 10th

Grey Heron; two in the Shire Valley and one at West Littleton Dam. Canada Goose; two in the Shire Valley on the Small Pond and two at West Littleton Dam. Red Kite; one over Rushmead Lane. Sand Martin; one over the village was new for the year. Swallow; four at West Littleton and two at Ringswell  Dew Pond. Common Stonechat; one from Orchid Lane. Song Thrush; several singing in the valleys north of the village. Mistle Thrush; three in the Shire Valley and one in the village. Blackcap and Common Chiffchaff; 'lots' singing everywhere. Willow Warbler; two singing in the Shire Valley. Bullfinch; one on West Littleton Down, Linnet; they really are everywhere you look! Corn Bunting; a lot singing especially from the Down Road area.

 

Saturday 11th

Two Northern and one Greenland Wheatear from Middledown Lane, two Canada Geese on Church's Pond and a Goshawk over Beek's Lane, Marshfield.

Sunday 12th

A Peregrine over a garden in the village with it or another over Rushmead Lane, Willow Warbler near Motcombe Farm and five Mistle Thrush singing over a wide area south of the village.

 

Monday 13th

Highlight; at least seven ducklings for the Mallard pair on Ringswell Dew Pond! Two Swallow over Ringswell Dew Pond, two Canada Geese on Church's Pond and a further two in the Shire Valley plus two Mistle Thrush singing and two Grey Heron. Corn Bunting/ Yellowhammer a flock of 100+ on Rushmead Farm.

 

Tuesday 14th

A White Wagtail at West Littleton Dam plus Canada Goose and Swallow. Nine ducklings, Grey Wagtail and two Swallow at Ringswell Dew Pond.

 

Wednesday 15th

A pair of Marsh Tit in Cherry Wood; Swallow, two over Ringswell Dew Pond and two at Ashwicke; Blackcap appears widespread; Common Chiffchaff, even more than a couple of days ago; Willow Warbler, three at Ringswell and one from Ayford Lane; Mistle Thrush, two at Ashwicke; Bullfinch, singles at Ringswell and Ashwicke plus two at Cherry Wood.

 

Thursday 16th

A Common Whitethroat from Rushmead Lane plus three Northern Wheatear. Four more Northern Wheatear from Orchid land and another Common Whitethroat from Dunsdown Lane. A Red Kite over West Littleton, two Canada Geese, two Swallow and Grey Heron on West Littleton Dam,

 

Friday 17th

Singing Willow warbler south of the village, nine Mallard ducklings doing well on Ringswell Dew Pond also two Swallow there, Northern Wheatear from Rushmead Lane in horse paddocks, good numbers of Corn Bunting from on Northfield Lane, c.60 on Rushmead Farm, two Mistle Thrush and Common Whitethroat on Ringswell Common.

 

Saturday 18th

A Yellow Wagtail in horse paddocks from Rushmead Lane also five Northern Wheatear and several Pied Wagtail. From West Littleton Dam, two Canada Geese, four Swallow and Fieldfare. On Church's pond, two more Canada Geese. Common Whitethroat from Down Road and Shirehill Lane.

 

Sunday 19th

A few Swallow around including from Rushmead Lane where there were also two Sand Martin and four Northern Wheatear in the horse paddock. A Lesser Whitethroat near Beek's Lane, eight ducklings at Ringswell Dew Pond, Bullfinch from Cherry Wood, Common Whitethroat at West End Lane and Ayford Lane plus large numbers of Blackcap in the whole area.

 

Monday 20th

Fourteen House Martin, a few Swallow and calling Tawny Owl at Ringswell. Two Canada Geese over the village at dawn, five Northern Wheatear from Orchid/ Rushmead Lane and a couple of  Common Whitethroat noted.

 

Tuesday 21st

Highlight; Sparrowhawk taking a Pigeon and then fighting off Common Buzzard and Crow! In the Shire Valley, four Grey Heron and two Canada Geese with a further two Canada Geese on West Littleton Dam. From West Littleton Down; Sparrowhawk and Red Kite. From Northfield Lane; two Meadow Pipit with five Northern Wheatear from Rushmead Lane paddocks and Peregrine from Middledown Lane. At Ringswell; six House Martin, lots of Swallow and three Common Whitethroat.

 

Wednesday 22nd

Highlight; Garden Warbler, one heard and another seen in Cherry Wood also several Blackcap there. Lots of Swallows south of the village, two Mistle Thrush singing in the Ashwicke area. Two Meadow Pipit and two Common Whitethroat from Beek's Lane.

 

Thursday 23rd

Highlight; A Goshawk circling over Withymead, Marshfield! Five Northern Wheatear in Rushmead Lane horse paddocks and one on West Littleton Down. Two Canada Geese, Grey Heron and Grey Wagtail on West Littleton Dam. 20 Linnet at Ringswell and four Common Whitethroat seen today with birds noted from eight or nine locations across the patch.

 

Friday 24th

Shire Valley; Two Canada Geese, two Mistle Thrush, two Grey Heron and House Martin. Rushmead Lane horse paddock held six Northern Wheatear. Generally a few Swallow around and four Common Whitethroat.

 

Saturday 25th

Hobby and Common Buzzard over the village. Lesser Whitethroat from the Tormarton Road near Shire Valley. Six Common Whitethroat today. Two Canada Geese on West Littleton Dam and Church's Pond.

 

Sunday 26th

A quiet day with several Swallow and House Martin, four Common Whitethroat and a Northern Wheatear from Star Farm paddocks.

 

Monday 27th

Northern Section: Whinchat from Rushmead Lane and Northern Wheatear from Orchid Lane. Southern Section: Three Common Whitethroat, four Lesser Whitethroat, two Mistle Thrush, Grey Heron, two Willow Warbler, Bullfinch and Tawny Owl.

Two Northern Wheatear from Rushmead Lane paddocks and 30 Linnet from Northfield Lane. Two Canada Geese on Ringswell Dew Pond along with six Swallow, Grey Heron and five Mallard ducklings still.

 

Wednesday 29th

A Northern Wheatear from Rushmead Lane horse paddocks, two White Wagtail from West Littleton Road near the A420 and c.70 Starling from Northfield Lane. A Bullfinch at Ringswell also eight House Martin, Lesser Whitethroat and two Swallow.

 

Thursday 30th

Ringswell Dew Pond; Lesser Whitethroat, two Swallow and Bullfinch, A pair of Marsh Tit at Cloud Wood, two Canada Geese at Church's Pond, 12 House Martin and Tawny Owl (calling at 13:00!) at Ringswell.
