The Marshfield Patch Diary





Tuesday 1st

50 species recorded today! A Barn Owl over the A420 west of Marshfield. West Littleton Dam, Nine Mallard on West Littleton Dam. Four Grey Heron, 25 Golden Plover, c.250 Fieldfare and three Mistle Thrush in the Shire Valley, C.60 Corn Bunting on Rushmead Farm and nearby Merlin and c.100 Lapwing over Rushmead Lane. C.50 Fieldfare on Northfield Lane. A pair of Common Stonechat from West Littleton Road and around Garston Farm Air Strip: c.100 Corn Bunting, Reed Bunting and c.60 Linnet.


Also; Red-legged Partridge, Common Pheasant, Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Black-headed and Common Gull, Woodpigeon, Stock Dove, Collared Dove, Great-spotted Woodpecker, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail, Pied Wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Redwing, Song Thrush, Goldcrest, Long-tailed, Blue and Great Tit, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Jay, Magpie, Jackdaw, Rook, Carrion Crow, Raven, House Sparrow, Starling, Chaffinch, Goldfinch and Yellowhammer. Wednesday 2nd

Combined reports; Barn Owl, c.200 Corn Bunting, 50 Yellowhammer, three Raven, c.200 Common Gull, Stock Dove, c. 300 Linnet, two Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, three Common Buzzard, 30 Golden Plover, 50 Lapwing, seven Skylark, 50 Starling, c.300 Fieldfare with a few Redwing, Common Stonechat, three Pied Wagtail and c.35 Meadow Pipit. Thursday 3rd

A Common Snipe at West Littleton Dam and at Ringswell, Water Rail at the sewage works (the first ever here) plus Bullfinch and Moorhen. Grey Wagtail and a pair of Mallard in the Shire Valley. (John Barnett)


Friday 4th

C.300 Common Gull, four Yellowhammer, two Common Stonechat, four Common Buzzard and c.200 Fieldfare/ Redwing. (Nigel Sluman)


Saturday 5th

Of note, 68 Lapwing, 100 Common Gull, Common Buzzard, c.150 Linnet and Raven from Down Road. Three Common Buzzard and three Raven from Rushmead Lane. (Pete Coslett)


Sunday 6th

A Little Egret to the west of Shirehill Bridge, In the Shire Valley, two Green Woodpecker, Coal Tit, Mistle Thrush, 12 Raven, two Bullfinch and lots of Long-tailed, Blue and Great Tit in a 50+ flock. (John Barnett)


Thursday 10th

At least one Brambling with Chaffinch in Withymead Car Park, Marshfield throughout the day. (John Barnett)


Tuesday 15th

Rushmead Lane: 150 Corn Bunting, 70 Lapwing, two Golden Plover, 12 Stock Dove and a pair of Common Stonechat. (Nigel Sluman)


Thursday 17th

A Woodcock in woods near Motcoombe Farm, two Herring Gull from West End Lane, c.150 Redwing and c.180 Fieldfare around the area, a few Meadow Pipit and Common Stonechat around West Littleton Road. (John Barnett)

Sunday 20th

Reported today; Three Grey Heron, three Common Buzzard, c.100 Lapwing, eight Black-headed Gull, c.130 Common Gull, nine Herring Gull, four Lesser-black-backed Gull, female Kestrel, three Raven, 35 Skylark, 70 Starling, c.200 Fieldfare, c.20 Redwing, Song Thrush, 30 Pied Wagtail, 30 Meadow Pipit, c.50 Goldfinch, c.60 Corn Bunting and c.50 Yellowhammer. At least one Brambling amongst a hundred+ Chaffinch at Withymead playing fields this afternoon. (Pete Coslett)

Monday 21st

Tuesday 22nd

Rushmead Farm; Two Common Stonechat, Merlin, c.100 Corn Bunting, c.250 Fieldfare and Grey Heron. Down Track; Several Continental Song Thrush and Continental Blackbirds plus Sparrowhawk. South of the village; Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, two Bullfinch, c.190 Fieldfare and many Skylark. Very few Redwing... anywhere! (John Barnett)


Friday 25th

Shire Valley: Grey Heron, two Marsh Tit, singing Mistle Thrush, several singing Treecreeper plus Kestrel and Sparrowhawk. Two Jack Snipe at Dunsdown Pool, West Littleton... our highest count for the patch! (John Barnett)


Monday 28th

One Jack Snipe on Dunsdown Pool and six Mallard (four ♂ two ♀) on West Littleton Dam. At Ringswell, ten Pied Wagtail, two Grey Wagtail and two Common Chiffchaff at the Water Works plus 20 Chaffinch at Withymead Playing Fields. C.300 Fieldfare in fields on the south side of Shirehill Lane with a further c.200 from Rushmead Lane. Also from Rushmead Lane c.1000 Common Gull.


In addition around the patch; Common Buzzard, Black-headed, Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gull, Barn Owl, Green and (2) Great Spotted Woodpecker, Song Thrush, Redwing, Long-tailed, Great, Blue and Coal Tit.

Wednesday 30th

Still two wintering Common Chiffchaff at Ringswell Water Works along with five Pied Wagtail and Sparrowhawk also plenty of finches, Thrush and Tits in the area. Common Stonechat and a further five Pied Wagtail from Northfield Lane.
