50 species recorded today! A Barn Owl over the A420 west of Marshfield. West Littleton Dam, Nine Mallard on West Littleton Dam. Four Grey Heron, 25 Golden Plover, c.250 Fieldfare and three Mistle Thrush in the Shire Valley, C.60 Corn Bunting on Rushmead Farm and nearby Merlin and c.100 Lapwing over Rushmead Lane. C.50 Fieldfare on Northfield Lane. A pair of Common Stonechat from West Littleton Road and around Garston Farm Air Strip: c.100 Corn Bunting, Reed Bunting and c.60 Linnet.

 

Also; Red-legged Partridge, Common Pheasant, Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Black-headed and Common Gull, Woodpigeon, Stock Dove, Collared Dove, Great-spotted Woodpecker, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail, Pied Wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Redwing, Song Thrush, Goldcrest, Long-tailed, Blue and Great Tit, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Jay, Magpie, Jackdaw, Rook, Carrion Crow, Raven, House Sparrow, Starling, Chaffinch, Goldfinch and Yellowhammer.

A Common Snipe at West Littleton Dam and at Ringswell, Water Rail at the sewage works (the first ever here) plus Bullfinch and Moorhen. Grey Wagtail and a pair of Mallard in the Shire Valley.

 

Friday 4th

C.300 Common Gull, four Yellowhammer, two Common Stonechat, four Common Buzzard and c.200 Fieldfare/ Redwing.

 

Saturday 5th

Of note c.70 Lapwing, 100 Common Gull, Common Buzzard, c.150 Linnet and Raven from Down Road. Three Common Buzzard and three Raven from Rushmead Lane.

 

Sunday 6th

A Little Egret to the west of Shirehill Bridge, In the Shire Valley, two Green Woodpecker, Coal Tit, Mistle Thrush, 12 Raven, two Bullfinch and lots of Long-tailed, Blue and Great Tit in a 50+ flock.

 

Thursday 10th

At least one Brambling with Chaffinch in Withymead Car Park, Marshfield throughout the day.

 

Tuesday 15th

Rushmead Lane: 150 Corn Bunting, 70 Lapwing, two Golden Plover, 12 Stock Dove and a pair of Common Stonechat.

 

Thursday 17th

A Woodcock in woods near Motcoombe Farm, two Herring Gull from West End Lane, c.150 Redwing and c.180 Fieldfare around the area, a few Meadow Pipit and Common Stonechat around West Littleton Road.

Tawny Owl calling near Withymead Road in the evening.

 

Sunday 20th

Reported today; Three Grey Heron, three Common Buzzard, c.100 Lapwing, eight Black-headed Gull, c.130 Common Gull, nine Herring Gull, four Lesser-black-backed Gull, female Kestrel, three Raven, 35 Skylark, 70 Starling, c.200 Fieldfare, c.20 Redwing, Song Thrush, 30 Pied Wagtail, 30 Meadow Pipit, c.50 Goldfinch, c.60 Corn Bunting and c.50 Yellowhammer. At least one Brambling amongst a hundred+ Chaffinch at Withymead playing fields this afternoon.

Rushmead Farm; Two Common Stonechat, Merlin, c.100 Corn Bunting, c.250 Fieldfare and Grey Heron. Down Track; Several Continental Song Thrush and Continental Blackbirds plus Sparrowhawk. South of the village; Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, two Bullfinch, c.190 Fieldfare and many Skylark. Very few Redwing!

 

Friday 25th

Shire Valley: Grey Heron, two Marsh Tit, singing Mistle Thrush, several singing Treecreeper plus Kestrel and Sparrowhawk. Two Jack Snipe at Dunsdown Pool, West Littleton... our highest count for the patch!

 

Monday 28th

One Jack Snipe on Dunsdown Pool and six Mallard (four ♂ two ♀) on West Littleton Dam. At Ringswell, ten Pied Wagtail, two Grey Wagtail and two Common Chiffchaff at the Water Works plus 20 Chaffinch at Withymead Playing Fields. C.300 Fieldfare in fields on the south side of Shirehill Lane with a further c.200 from Rushmead Lane. Also from Rushmead Lane c.1000 Common Gull. In addition around the patch; Common Buzzard, Black-headed, Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gull, Barn Owl, Green and (2) Great Spotted Woodpecker, Song Thrush, Redwing, Long-tailed, Great, Blue and Coal Tit.

Wednesday 30th

Still two wintering Common Chiffchaff at Ringswell Water Works along with five Pied Wagtail and Sparrowhawk also plenty of finches, Thrush and Tits in the area. Common Stonechat and a further five Pied Wagtail from Northfield Lane.

 


 

FEBRUARY 2019

 

Sunday 3rd

Reported today around the lanes this afternoon; Very quiet bird wise, two Common Buzzard, Kestrel, ten Common Gull, a few Fieldfare, at least six Continental Blackbird and two Raven.

 

Thursday 7th

A blustery and wet patch; Six Golden Plover, two Common Buzzard, Common Stonechat, six Pied Wagtail, 13 Skylark, six Redwing, 40 Fieldfare, 53 Corn Bunting, three Yellowhammer, 23 Linnet, Reed Bunting and c.100 Chaffinch.

 

Saturday 9th

At least one Brambling with the Chaffinch flock in Withymead playing field trees and nearby gardens this afternoon, also Marsh Tit.

Down Road area; Two Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, 30 Stock Dove, c.100 Woodpigeon, two Little Owl, a few singing Skylark, Common Chiffchaff, 40 Fieldfare, 40 Linnet, c.200 Starling, three Raven and two Brown Hare.

 

Thursday 21st

Two Grey Heron, +200 Fieldfare in the Shire Valley also Kestrel and two Common Stonechat from Rushmead Lane.

 

Sunday 24th

Quiet on the patch today; Two Common Buzzard, Kestrel, two Little Owl, 25 Stock Dove, c.200 Linnet, a few Skylark and Yellowhammer plus three Raven.

 

Monday 25th

Singing Common Chiffchaff, Grey Heron and a Small Tortoiseshell at Ringswell.

 

Tuesday 26th

Four Lapwing  and lots of singing Skylark from the Down Road/ Track area. a Merlin from Shirehill Lane, fifteen Meadow Pipit from 5 Northfield Lane and 100+ Corn Bunting from the Rushmead Farm area.

Bit windy for much at Marshfield this afternoon but 58 Golden Plover off Tormarton Road was a nice find.

A Little Grebe was present on West Littleton Dam.

 

Sunday 10th

A wet and windy Marshfield this afternoon; Ten Stock Dove, two Common Stonechat,13 Corn Bunting and Common Buzzard from Down Road. Another 80 Stock Dove from the Tormarton Road.

 

Monday 11th

This morning; Goshawk over the village and then drifted south. Northfield Lane; c.30 Yellowhammer and two Stock Dove. Rushmead Lane; Peregrine and two Brown Hare. Shire Valley; Four Grey Wagtail, two Mistle Thrush and four Grey Heron. Rushmead Farm; c.100 Linnet. General; several Raven, a few Fieldfare and lots of Skylark singing.

 

Wednesday 13th

One Jack Snipe on show around the edge of Dunsdown Pool this morning.

 

Thursday 14th

This morning, lots of singing Skylark and Corn Buntings which seem to be establishing territories also a Little Grebe still on West Littleton Dam.

Lots of Skylark (20+) from Down Road this morning, also 40 Linnet, three Corn Bunting on territory, three Common Buzzard, Kestrel and Raven. Two Northern Wheatear (the first of the year) from Orchid Lane.

Three Northern Wheatear just behind the horse field on Rushmead Lane. Greenfinch by the mill in the Shire Valley plus six Grey Heron there. South of the village, Greenfinch near Ringswell Dew Pond also of note at least 15 Song Thrush singing in a 3 km area south-west to south-east of the village.

 

Tuesday 26th

Combined reports from the patch today; Two Raven, five Common Buzzard, lots of singing Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer, Skylark, Golden Plover in fields from the West Littleton Road, two Northern Wheatear from Northfield Lane, several Meadow Pipit and c.60 Corn Bunting. Greenfinch around the village market square, singing Blackcap south of the village plus two Redwing, two Fieldfare and a Red Kite and Little Owl from several locations.

 

Thursday 28th

Quick walk along Northfield Lane this morning. Lots of singing Skylark 30+, at least 20 Corn Bunting, ten Yellowhammer, 40-50 Meadow Pipit (mostly by Rushmead Barn) Linnet, Goldfinch, eight Pied Wagtail, Common Buzzard and Raven.

 

Sunday 31st

Two Swallow over Shire Bridge this afternoon also Mistle Thrush, Song Thrush, three Nuthatch, two Common Chiffchaff and two Common Buzzard. Twenty-two Stock Dove from Down Road and two Sand Martin north over West Littleton Down.

 


 

APRIL 2019

 

Monday 1st

Combined reports today: Greenfinch in several areas in the village. Little Owl from West Littleton Road and eight Golden Plover on West Littleton Down. Blackcap and Common Chiffchaff singing in the Shire Valley, also three Grey Heron, Mistle Thrush and a few Fieldfare. Northern Wheatear on Northfield Lane also 30+ Yellowhammer, 30+ Skylark, ten Corn Bunting, two Pied Wagtail, Common Chiffchaff, three Common Buzzard, Red Kite (which drifted towards West Littleton) and three Raven.

Northern Wheatear on Northfield Lane this afternoon, also 30 Corn Bunting, 20 Skylark, ten Yellowhammer a few Linnet and Meadow Pipit and 12 Stock Dove. C.100 mixed Lesser Black-backed and Herring Gull from the Tormarton Road, with Swallow and Peregrine over West Littleton.

 

Wednesday 10th

A Hobby, the first of the year, was present briefly in the Shire Valley, along with a female Reed Bunting , two pairs of Grey Wagtail, several Blackcap and c.25 Stock Dove. West Littleton Dam, two Canada Geese. Ringswell Dewpond area; male Common Redstart, several Greenfinch three House Martin, two Swallow and several Willow Warbler. Moorhen on Dunsdown Pond.

 

Thursday 11th

Ringswell Dewpond: Grey Heron, Swallow, four House Martin and Willow Warbler.

 

Friday 12th

Ringswell Dewpond, male Common Redstart still also six House Martin and Swallow.

 

Thursday 18th

Combined reports: A male Common Cuckoo and a single Grey Partridge reported from the Rushmead Lane area, five Northern Wheatear, Willow Warbler, two Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

 

Friday 19th

Common Whitethroat from Down Road.

 

Sunday 21st

Combined reports today: At least eight Northern Wheatear on the patch this afternoon including those of the 'Greenland' form. All the usual, Skylark, Yellowhammer, Corn Bunting, three Common Buzzard and two Raven. Garden Warbler at Ringswell, two Common Whitethroat in the Shire Valley and 30 Fieldfare just north of the valley.

Reported from the patch today: Broadmead Brook (Shire Valley): Three Mallard, two Grey Heron, five Common Buzzard, Moorhen, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, Raven, four Skylark, two Swallow, c.10 Common Chiffchaff, two Blackcap, Common Whitethroat, three Nuthatch, three Mistle Thrush, four Grey Wagtail, four Chaffinch and two Linnet.

A very smart looking Northern Wheatear on Northfield Lane this afternoon, also in the the same field female Northern Wheatear, three Skylark, five Yellowhammer, seven Pied Wagtail, 12 Corn Bunting three Common Buzzard, two Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

Thursday 2nd

At least three pairs of Bullfinch at Ringswell, a couple of Common Whitethroat and this evening a Hobby over the village!

 

Friday 3rd

Today south of Bellum at the west end of the village; Four Common Whitethroat, two Willow Warbler and a pair of Lesser Whitethroat.

 

Sunday 5th

Not strictly the 'Marshfield Patch' but worth inclusion here because of the proximity and rarity status! Three Dotterel, two males and a female, in Pea Fields on the north side of Drifton Hill, Wiltshire.

Fourteen Common Buzzard, Red Kite, c.70 Lesser Black-backed and ten Herring Gull, four Yellow Wagtail, six Pied Wagtail and a Northern Wheatear following a tractor ploughing at the top of Down Road this afternoon. Also Kestrel, four Common Whitethroat, c.30 Yellowhammer, ten Corn Bunting and ten Skylark in the area. Additionally several House Martin at Ebbdown Farm and a Northern Wheatear on Rushmead Lane.

A male Whinchat in the Down Road/ Track area and a Red Kite over Plough Farm. A Peregrine over Down Road.

A Hobby over the A420 near Cold Ashton.

 

Sunday 19th

Nuthatch family in Shire valley this afternoon with at least four juveniles also Grey Heron, Grey Wagtail, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Blackcap, Common Chiffchaff and Bullfinch. Nearby a few Linnets from Down Road also three Corn Bunting, two Yellowhammer, ten Skylark, two Common Whitethroat, Blackcap, Common Chiffchaff, two Buzzard and three Raven. Also a Little Owl was noted from Dunsdown Lane.

 

Tuesday 21st

35 Stock Dove from Down Road, good numbers of House Martin at Ebbdown Farm and in the village and 40 Linnet from Rushmead Lane.

 

Thursday 23rd

From Down Road this morning, Common Buzzard, 10 Skylark, three Corn Bunting, several Yellowhammer, six Bullfinch (including four juveniles) Goldfinch, three Blackcap, Common Chiffchaff, three Common Whitethroat and three Raven.

 

Friday 31st

Yellow Wagtail on the path crossing fields opposite Marshfield Primary School and 40 Linnets nearby.

 


 

JUNE 2019

 

Monday 3rd

At least 20 House Martin around Withymead playing field and in the Shire Valley a family of Grey Wagtail, Grey Heron and two Canada Geese.

 

Tuesday 4th

A Spotted Flycatcher was present in Shire Valley this afternoon (the first of the year) along with three Grey Heron, two Canada Geese, four Common Buzzard, three Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, two Grey Wagtail, four Pied Wagtail, two Swift, Blackcap, Common Chiffchaff, Jay and three Raven.

Down Road area; Three Common Buzzard, Hobby, 12 Swift, two Great Spotted Woodpecker, 15 Skylark, Pied Wagtail, Swallow, five Common Whitethroat, Common Chiffchaff, ten Yellowhammer, 12 Corn Bunting, 20 Goldfinch, 30 Linnet and six Raven. Nearby in the village, 22 House Martin, 21 Swift and 12 Swallow. In the Shire Valley; two Spotted Flycatcher, two Grey Heron, two Canada Geese and lots of Great Spotted Woodpecker action with at least two active nests!

 

Sunday 9th

Shire Valley: Grey Heron, three Common Buzzard, four Stock Dove, four Great Spotted Woodpecker, four Raven, two Swallow, 14 House Martin, six Long-tailed Tit, four Common Chiffchaff, five Blackcap, Mistle Thrush and four Grey Wagtail. Rushmead Lane: 12 Skylark, 16 Starling, 10 House Sparrow, eight Linnet, seven Corn Bunting and four Yellowhammer.

 

Sunday16th

A windy Shire Valley this afternoon: Four Grey Heron, Little Egret, two Common Buzzard, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Swift, Nuthatch, Mistle and Song Thrush, two Blackcap, Common Chiffchaff, Spotted Flycatcher, two Jay and two Raven.

 

Wednesday 19th

Finally caught up with the Marshfield Little Owl! Also lots of Corn Bunting and Yellowhammer singing. Also heard at least two Quail audible from the poppy fields along the left hand side of Down Road around 10:30.

 

Thursday 20th

One calling from Down Road, Marshfield from north end of large Poppy field late evening on the 20th.

 

Friday 21st

A Quail was heard calling for around ten minutes from a cereal crop to the south of Middledown Road, Marshfield on the 21st. No sound of any from Down Road late evening but plenty of Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer, Linnet and Goldfinch as well as Common Buzzard, two Raven, Sparrowhawk and a nearby Little Owl.

A Grasshopper Warbler (the first for at least three years) was heard 'reeling' several times from the Down Road/ Down Track area at Marshfield this evening. Also a Common Quail calling from fields behind Rushmead Farm, Marshfield.

 

Saturday 29th

A Quail was heard again from fields on the south side of Middledown Road this evening.

 

Sunday 30th

In the Shire Valley, still one pair of Spotted Flycatchers by the second pond, Grey Heron and lots of Painted Lady butterflies. Also today an unconfirmed report of Quail calling from the Down Road area.

 


 

JULY 2019

 

Tuesday 2nd

Around the patch today; Common Buzzard, Stock Dove, Collared Dove, ten Swift, Kestrel, c.100 Rook, Raven, eight Skylark, four House Martin, two Swallow, two Common Chiffchaff, four Blackcap, four Common Whitethroat, 12 House Sparrow, Pied Wagtail, 25 Linnet, eight Goldfinch, four Corn Bunting and four Yellowhammer.

 

Thursday 4th

A Quail was audible from Down Road this evening.

 

Friday 5th

At least one Spotted Flycatcher in the Shire Valley at Marshfield today.

 

Sunday 7th

At least thirty (30) House Sparrow from Northfield Lane plus good numbers of Skylark around. From Orchid Lane, Marbled White and Ringlet and a pair of Essex Skipper on Down Track. Also of interest some lovely Pyramidal Orchid, Long-stalked Cranesbill including a white flower version, and recently Shepherd's Needle on Rushmead Farm.

 

Monday 8th

At least one singing Quail (possibly three) still audible from the Down Road/ Down Track area at 21: 30 also Common Buzzard, Cuckoo, Little Owl, Mistle Thrush, Linnet, Corn Bunting and Yellowhammer.

 

Sunday 14th

At least four audible from Marshfield today; two from the Down Road/ Down Track area, two from an area with no public access on Rushmead Farm and two from Northfield Lane. Also 20 + Corn Bunting and two Grey Partridge.

 

Saturday 20th

Windy at Marshfield this afternoon but plenty to see. In the Down Road/ Downthorns Farm area; Two Common Buzzard, Quail, 30 Stock Dove, Hobby, Little Owl, 20 Swift over the farm. Skylark and Corn Bunting. Shirehill Lane/ Shire Valley; two Grey Heron, three Common Buzzard, four Red Kite following tractor,10 Swift and five Raven.

One possibly two Quail audible very distantly from Down Road, at 21:25.

At least three Quail audible from Down Road this afternoon. Also four Common Buzzard, Kestrel, 11 Stock Dove, Great Spotted Woodpecker, four Mistle Thrush, 40 Common Swift, Common Whitethroat, Skylark, Yellowhammer, Corn Bunting and three Raven.

Two Quail again this afternoon from Down Road, also 63 Common Swift over heading south.

 

Tuesday 30th

This afternoon a juvenile Goshawk close to the road, also in the Shire Valley, Red Kite and Marsh Tit.

 

Wednesday 31st

In the Shire Valley; At least four Red Kite, Hobby, Kestrel, several Common Buzzard, half a dozen Raven, Grey Wagtail, Grey Heron and several Bullfinch.

Thursday 1st

A short walk along Northfield Lane this morning; Three Common Buzzard, Quail audible near Orchid Lane, a few Skylark, five Swallow, four Yellowhammer, two Greenfinch, 20 Linnet, 40 Starling and two Corn Bunting.

 

Friday 2nd

A Quail audible form Rushmead Lane still.

 

Saturday 3rd

Two Quail flushed from the footpath south of Star Farm this afternoon - a first for this area; and lots of Holly Blues about. Also today one Quail audible from the Rushmead Lane area.

 

Sunday 4th

A Common Sandpiper was found on a small pool at the east end of Cloud Wood by John Barnett today. It represents the first ever record of this species for the 'Marshfield Patch' and takes the patch total to 161 and 100 for the year!! Also today in the Shire Valley; Three Grey Heron, five Common Buzzard, Kestrel, Moorhen, three Lesser Black-backed Gull, two Stock Dove, 20 Common Swift over south, Green Woodpecker, three Great Spotted Woodpecker, Grey Wagtail, ten House Martin, five Swallow, three Spotted Flycatcher including two juveniles, two Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, two Jay, 200+ mixed Corvids and three Raven.

South of the village three Sand Martin with 30 House Martin over Ringswell dewpond in the evening.

 

Monday 12th

Common Buzzard, Little Owl, Kestrel, Hobby, 12 Skylark, ten Swallow, eight Pied Wagtail, c.80 Starling, c.85 Linnet, two Greenfinch, at least ten Yellowhammer and at least ten Corn Bunting were seen across the patch today.

 

Tuesday 13th

Combined reports today: Northern section; Little Owl, several Common Buzzard, Hobby, Kestrel, Grey Heron, Spotted Flycatcher, nine Skylark, five Pied Wagtail, ten Swallow, c.50 House Martin, Common Swift, several Common Chiffchaff. five Mistle Thrush, c.150 Linnet, Yellowhammer, Corn Bunting, two Raven. From the southern section; Common Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler around Ringswell dewpond.

A Quail was seen to run across Rushmead Lane in front the observer today.

 

Tuesday 20th

A Northern Wheatear Rushmead Lane/ West Littleton Road, juvenile Yellow Wagtail in the fields from the Tormarton Road and Spotted Flycatcher in the Shire Valley plus another the valley below Cold Ashton.

 

Friday 23rd

Four Northern Wheatear were seen around Castle Cottages at the west end of Rushmead Lane this evening.

 

Sunday 25th

In the Shire Valley; Ten Raven, two Grey Heron, Bullfinch, at least two Spotted Flycatcher (by the first pond) Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and a Northern Wheatear from Rushmead Lane. South of the village, several Common Chiffchaff at Ringswell plus Bullfinch and three Common Redstart including one male.

 

Monday 26th

Combined reports today: Three Northern Wheatear and two Whinchat were seen in fields around Rushmead Barn and lane. Of note in the Shire Valley, a Reed Warbler was seen briefly near the weir and second pond and at least one Spotted Flycatcher was present. A Hobby was noted over the village.

Tuesday 27th

Combined reports: At least five Northern Wheatear between West Littleton Road and Rushmead Lane and from the lane, Merlin, three Whinchat and  two Yellow Wagtail. In the Shire Valley, two Grey Heron, several Common Chiffchaff and Marsh Tit. West of Shirehill Bridge, Marsh Tit and Kingfisher. South of the village near Ringswell Dewpond, Red Kite, at least 30 House Martin, Common Redstart, two Spotted Flycatcher, Willow Warbler and several Blackcap.

Wednesday 28th

South of the village; A couple of Willow Warblers, lots of Blackcap, several Common Chiffchaff, at least one Garden Warbler in the thicket to the west of Ringswell Dewpond and 60+ Swallow on wires.

 

Thursday 29th

Over 300 Swallows on wires south of Marshfield village with a number of House Martin. Also two Bullfinch around Ringswell Dewpond and a Barn Owl over the A420.

 

Saturday 31st

Combined reports: Seven Northern Wheatear in the fields around Rushmead Barn this afternoon, also six Whinchat together on the stone walls along West Littleton Road. Across the patch of note were Peregrine, two Sparrowhawk, Common Chiffchaff, Nuthatch, Great Spotted and Green Woodpecker and Raven.

Sunday 1st

Combined reports today: Northern section; Three Northern Wheatear in fields around Rushmead Barn also two Yellow Wagtail with another three Northern Wheatear and Whinchat West Littleton Road. In the Shire Valley, Sparrowhawk and Kingfisher. Southern section; Little Grebe, eight Mallard and Willow Warbler from Church's Pond. In the Doncombe Valley two male Redstarts; one above the ST Works and one by Ringswell Dewpond. Common Chiffchaff in abundance!

Several Blackcap, Common Chiffchaff, a family of Greenfinch and Garden Warbler around Ringswell Dewpond.

 

Tuesday 3rd

Across the patch this morning; At least one Grey Heron, several Common Buzzard, ♀ Kestrel, several Lesser Black-backed and Herring Gull, two Stock Dove, Woodpigeon, half a dozen Collared Dove, still a fair few Swallow and House Martin, Common Chiffchaff, Blue and Great Tit, several Nuthatch, an abundance of corvid including ten Raven and small flocks of Linnet,

 

Wednesday 4th

A Mute Swan, (the first of the year and first for at least four years) was seen on Church's Pool this evening.

 

Thursday 5th

Three Common Whitethroat and a Lesser Whitethroat at Ringswell Dewpond.

 

Saturday 7th

Tawny Owl in the Shire Valley and Barn Owl from the Tormarton Road.

 

Sunday 8th

Three Northern Wheatear on Orchid Lane, also Common Whitethroat, Kestrel and two Raven. Another Northern Wheatear by Rushmead Cottages and 60 Linnet from West Littleton Road. In the Shire Valley; dozens of Common Chiffchaff, three Willow Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher, Blackcap, three Grey Heron, Kestrel, 40 Linnet and Hobby. Northfield Lane 65 Linnet, 140 Starling, Hobby and a few Meadow Pipit. Church's Pond, Mute Swan and ten  Mallard. George Lane Paddocks, two Yellow and four Pied Wagtail and a Northern Wheatear from Orchid Lane.

 

Tuesday 10th

Red Kite over Gunnings Wood in the Shire Valley, also Grey Heron, five Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, two Kestrel and 20 Raven with two more Raven from Rushmead Lane.

 

Friday 13th

A Wryneck briefly late afternoon in fields and hedgerows south-west of Ringswell Dewpond.

 

Sunday 15th

The Wryneck was noted again briefly in the same area this afternoon where it could be heard calling on occasion.

 

Monday 16th

Mute Swan still on Church's Pond, Red Kite over West Littleton Road and at least 400 Herring Gull from Rushmead Lane.

 

Tuesday 17th

Red Kite, 12 Common Buzzard, five Common, 30 Herring and 30 Lesser Black-backed Gull, two Kestrel, c.150 Jackdaw, two Raven, 40 Swallow, 50 House Martin, Common Whitethroat, Whinchat, two Common Stonechat, Northern Wheatear, 60 Linnet, 60 Corn Bunting  and two Reed Bunting.

 

Wednesday 18th

Grey Heron in the Shire Valley also 50 Linnet and five Swallow. Twenty Meadow Pipit from Down Road and widely scattered elsewhere. Two Common Stonechat on Rushmead Farm, Northern Wheatear from the Tormarton Road and Common Chiffchaff everywhere!!

 

Thursday 19th

Northfield Lane; 70 Linnet, 70 Corn Bunting and a Kestrel.

 

Friday 20th

Ringswell Dewpond; Yellow Wagtail and three Blackcap. Three Northern Wheatear from Rushmead Lane.

 

Sunday 22nd

Shire Valley; 33 Raven, three Grey Heron and at least ten Common Buzzard. Common Chiffchaff in the Ringswell and south area plus six Mistle Thrush, two Common Whitethroat, 30+ House Martin and two Sand Martin. Thirty-two (32) Mallard, a record patch count, on Church's Pool.

 

Monday 23rd

Northfield Lane; c.100 Corn Bunting, c.70 Linnet, a few Yellowhammer and a big increase in Skylark numbers and a small passage of Swallows. Rushmead Lane; at least 150 Meadow Pipit and lots more over the whole patch plus two Northern Wheatear and two Common Stonechat. Rushmead Farm; two Common Stonechat, two Whinchat, two Kestrel and Red Kite.

 

Monday 30th

This morning; Northfield Lane; At least 100 Corn Bunting, 70 Linnet and Common Stonechat. Rushmead Farm; at least 150 Corn Bunting and at least 100 Linnet also Kestrel. Ringswell and Dewpond; several Common Chiffchaff and a Barn Owl at 13:00! All morning a steady stream of House Martin and Swallow over and at least 250 Meadow Pipits around, far more this year than ever before.

 


 

OCTOBER 2019

 

Tuesday 1st

This morning in the Shire Valley.... Sunshine! Three Grey Heron, seven Common Buzzard, a single Swallow, several Common Chiffchaff and 30 Raven.

 

Saturday 5th

Shire Valley: Ten Mallard on 'Small Pond' this afternoon also Grey Heron, Common Buzzard, two Kestrel, Green Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Mistle Thrush, Grey Wagtail and two Common Chiffchaff. Eleven Raven and 30 Stock Dove from Down Road and Lapwing at West Littleton.

Sunday 6th

Not much around today; Shire Valley, Several Common Chiffchaff, Grey Heron and four Raven. Church's Pond, thirty Mallard and Marsh Tit. Ringswell, Coal Tit, three Mistle Thrush, Kestrel and a few Common  Chiffchaff.

 

Saturday 12th

Combined reports: A good selection of birds this afternoon including a distant Peregrine from Down Road, Northern Wheatear on Rushmead Barn, c.300 Linnet, 40 Corn Bunting, c.200 Starling and two Greenfinch from West Littleton Road. Also three Common Stonechat, Yellowhammer, Skylark, Mistle Thrush, two Jay, six Raven and ten Meadow Pipit.

 

Tuesday 15th

Eight Collared Dove, c.250 Starling, 30 Corn Bunting with a few Yellowhammer and Linnet.

 

Saturday 19th

At least two Common Stonechat from the West Littleton Road this afternoon.

 

Sunday 20th

A quick walk this morning produced Corn Buntings, Yellowhammers and Skylarks in good numbers at all localities. Kestrel, Raven, lots of Chaffinch and two Common Stonechat on West Littleton Road. Yellowhammer from Orchid Lane with good numbers of Corn Bunting, Skylark and Meadow Pipit.

 

Monday 21st

A short look around today yielded a few Yellow Buntings, a few Redwings and five Common Stonechat.

 

Tuesday 22nd

In the Shire Valley this morning; Grey Heron, a pair of Mallard, half a dozen Common Buzzard, Sock Dove, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, two Green and one Great Spotted Woodpecker, several fly-over Skylark, Grey and Pied Wagtail, several Wren and six Robin, an increase in Blackbird numbers, a small flock of Long-tailed, Blue and Great Tit, Nuthatch, Jay, Magpie, Jackdaw, Rook, Carrion Crow, six Raven, a couple of Chaffinch and a small flock of Goldfinch.

 

Thursday 24th

In the Shire Valley today; 15 Raven, 20 Redwing and Grey Heron.

 

Sunday 27th

Combined reports this afternoon: Down Road area - Eight Common Buzzard, two Kestrel, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Mistle Thrush, five Fieldfare, at least five Redwing, eight Blackbird, a few Linnet, ten Chaffinch, ten Yellowhammer, eight Skylark and three Raven.

 

A Short-eared Owl to within 15 metres on a post on Rushmead Lane and then flew around for about 15 minutes. Also Kestrel, two Common Stonechat on West Littleton Road, c.500 Starling in the area, 80 Linnet from Northfield Lane.

 

Monday 28th

Combined reports today: From Shirehill Lane, Small flocks of Fieldfare and Redwing over, two Pied and one Grey Wagtail, four Grey Heron and six Common Buzzard in ploughed field, also a couple of Redwing and c300 Common Gull. From Down Road, two Common Stonechat. West Littleton Road, four Common Stonechat, Greenfinch and two Kestrel. Still plenty of Mallard on Church's Pond and the nearby Doncombe Brook.

 

Tuesday 29th

This morning in the Shire Valley; Cormorant on 'Small Pond' with 14 Mallard, six Grey Heron, two female Mandarin on Broadmead Brook beyond the second gate, c.400 Woodpigeon, c.70 Redwing, Coal Tit and Bullfinch. This afternoon from Cherry Wood near Motcombe Farm; Woodcock, Tawny Owl, Marsh Tit and three Bullfinch.

 

Wednesday 30th

Lots of birds around this morning; An interesting mixed flock of several species in hedgerows on Rushmead Farm, including several Continental Blackbirds, increase in Chaffinch, several Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Redwing, Fieldfare, House Sparrow, Linnet, Pied Wagtail, Stonechat and even a couple of Reed Bunting. Over 1500 Starling by Tormarton Road, 40 Corn Bunting from Orchid Lane, 140 Linnet from Northfield Lane. A big increase in Goldcrest, calling from lots of places.

 

Thursday 31st

In the Shire Valley after two days of intense disturbance! Five Grey Heron, two Mistle Thrush, five Bullfinch and 20 Redwing.

 


 

NOVEMBER 2019

 

Thursday 7th

Northfield Lane: A large mixed flock including c.60 Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer, Linnet, Chaffinch and Goldfinch. A separate flock of c.180 Linnet, 50+ Meadow Pipit and Common Stonechat from Rushmead Farm. C.50 Fieldfare, 40 Redwing and 25 Blackbird. Sunday 10th

Combined Reports: C.500 Golden Plover between Pennsylvania, Spring Farm near Rushmead Farm. Also in the area c.40 Fieldfare. c.10 Common Buzzard, two Grey Heron, Little Egret, Red Kite, Stock Dove, c.800 Woodpigeon, four Kestrel, two Raven, c.40 Skylark, c.1000 Starling, 20 Redwing, five Common Stonechat, 30 Corn Bunting and 20 Yellowhammer.

 

Tuesday 12th

From a pretty 'birdless' patch the highlights today were c.300 Stock Dove and a possible Common Crossbill south-east over the Shire Valley.

 

Saturday 16th

Fairly quiet in the Down Road area this afternoon: Two Common Buzzard, Kestrel, 38 Fieldfare, 30 Linnet, cc.400 Starling, Common Stonechat, three Jay and three Raven.

Combined reports: Juvenile Cormorant, four Grey Heron, Mute Swan, ten Mallard, ten Common Buzzard, Kestrel, two Common Snipe, c.200 Common Gull, c.50 Stock Dove, c.700 Woodpigeon, several Collared Dove, Short-eared Owl, Great Spotted Woodpecker, good numbers of Skylark, two Grey Wagtail, Pied Wagtail, Dipper (the 1st for ten years) on Broadmead Brook in the Shire Valley, Wren, six Robin, up to six Common Stonechat across the patch, good numbers of Blackbird including the 'continental' form, c.150 Fieldfare, c.100 Redwing, Common Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Long-tailed, Coal, Great and Blue Tit, at least four Nuthatch, Jay, Magpie, Rook, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw and six Raven, Small numbers of House Sparrow and Starling, c.20 Chaffinch, c.20 Goldfinch, building numbers of Linnet, Yellowhammer and Corn Bunting.
