SYSTEMATIC LIST

The South Gloucestershire Systematic List follows the conventions of the BOU and the IOC.  The list currently stands at 345 species and forms believed to have occurred naturally in the recording area. Full species are UPPERCASE, forms are lower case. Follow the links for full details.

Categories A, B and C form the British List. Species in Category A have been recorded at least once since January 1st 1950, Category B at least once between January 1st 1800 and December 31st 1949 but not subsequently and species in Category C, although introduced, now form a self-sustaining population.

Species in Category D would appear in Category A except that there is reasonable doubt they have occurred naturally.

Category E comprises species that have been recorded as introductions, assisted transportees or escapees, whose breeding populations are thought not to be self-sustaining. Species in Category E that have bred in the wild in Britain are designated as E*. Category F are species recorded before 1850 to pre-historic times and known only from fossil records.

All reports of rare and scarce birds are subject to ratification by the appropriate rarities committee!
