2018:

JANUARY: Two flew north-east over Pilning Wetland early afternoon on the 7th later past Aust Warth at 15:20; One was seen in flight past Aust Warth on the 27th. NOVEMBER: On the 17th, one was seen in flight upriver from Northwick Warth late afternoon and two “Grey Geese” (presumed White-fronted) flew east over Severn Beach at 15:00;

 

2017:

Two flew strongly north-east over New Passage at 11:30 on March 15th.

 

2016:

Three were noted in flight north past Littleton Warth in the afternoon on October 23rd; Four were reported in flight over Northwick Warth around 11:00 on November 25th.

 

2014:

Seven were seen in flight past Aust Cliffs by 08:30 on March 10th.

2013:

In January a flock of 32 were seen in flight past Aust Warth at 13:00 on the 4th before finally settling on Northwick Warth. Just one was still present on the 5th; Two were present on Northwick Warth on November 21st.

 

2010:

Twelve flew north east over Aust Warth at 15.20 on February 6th having been seen earlier over Northwick Warth; Eighteen were reported at Oldbury Power Station on March 12th; On November 7th ten flew north east over Northwick Warth; Two were seen flying high upriver north east on December 19th; A party of seven flew east over Aust Warth at 09:15 on December 27th.

 

2009:

Four were seen on Northwick Warth on January 4th; On March 3rd two flew north over Aust Warth at 09:55.

 

2008:

Two adults flew up river past Littleton Warth on December 15th; Three adults were seen on Northwick Warth before heading north over Aust Warth on December 27th.

2007:

On November 15th three flew north over New Passage at midday.

2006:

Up to five were seen near Lagoon III at Oldbury Power Station from February 18th - 25th; On February 20th a skein of 17 flew inland over Severn Beach early morning; Thirty were noted in fields in the Shepperdine area on October 28th; On December 19th five were seen in the New Passage area.

 

2005:

An adult was present on Northwick Warth on December 19th.

2003:

One was seen on February 22nd - 23rd on Northwick Warth; Ten probably this species were noted November 8th at Old Passage.

2002:

A number were heard in flight over Thornbury at 20:30 on January 1st.

2001:

Two were seen at Aust Warth on January 12th; At least three were heard in flight wet to south west over Thornbury on January 16th; Three noted at Severn Beach heading south west on February 10th; An adult was present on Northwick Warth on December 9th.

 

2000:

Twenty-six were seen at Oldbury Power Station on January 1st; Two were present on Northwick Warth on January 27th - 29th.

1999:

Four were seen in flight over New Passage on October 18th; Four seen on Northwick Warth on November 13th; Thirty-four northeast past Oldbury Power Station on December 19th; Five noted on Northwick Warth on December 20th.

 

1998:

Two were seen at Oldbury Power Station on January 19th; Eleven were seen at Oldbury Power Station heading north east on December 1st.

 

1997:

On Severnside - ten were noted north east on January 12th with a further two on January 25th; Four, including two juveniles, were seen at Oldbury Power Station on October 31st; Up to eight birds were seen on Severnside from December 27th - 31st.

 

1996:

On Severnside - Seven were seen heading north east on November 27th, twenty-five flew east on December 22nd, seven noted heading north on December 23rd, five on Aust Warth on December 24th; At Oldbury Power Station; Five probably this species were noted on October 1st, eight on October 6th and two on December 12th,

 

1995:

Thirteen flew southwest over Yate on January 14th; Two adults were seen on Northwick Warth on December 17th; Seven were noted heading north east at Oldbury Power Station on December 24th.

 

1994:

Two adults and a juvenile were seen at Oldbury Power Station on November 17th & 20th; On Northwick Warth one was seen on December 25th - 26th with six present on December 28th.

 

1993:

One was seen at Oldbury Power Station on February 13th; On Severnside - at least three were noted on January 3rd, two on January 8th with single birds on January 11th and February 27th. Thirty-five were counted on Northwick Warth on February 20th - 21st.

 

1992:

One was seen at Oldbury Power Station on February 8th - 9th; On Severnside - three were noted heading south west on January 22nd with sixty-five heading north east on January 26th; On Northwick Warth one was reported on October 15th - 18th, in December eleven on the 25th, thirty-four on the 26th, six on the 27th and one on the 29th.

 

1991:

Five were seen at Oldbury Power Station on February 16th; On Severnside - twelve north east on January 13th, fifteen on February 16th and fourteen north east on the 17th; Several were heard calling over Thornbury at 22:10 on February 13th; One was noted on  Severnside from December 7th - 15th.

 

1990:

Seven were seen heading north past Littleton-on-Severn on December 15th; Twelve were noted over Almondsbury on December 23rd; At New Passage - six were counted on November 25th, three on the 28th and eight on December 1st.

 

1989:

One was seen on Northwick Warth on February 9th; Three were noted at Oldbury Power Station on November 19th; On Severnside - birds were noted between November 13th - 25th with a maximum of thirteen on the 25th.

 

1988:

Sixteen were counted in flight up river past Aust on January 22nd; On Severnside - three up river on October 29th and two on November 21st; At least three were heard south over Thornbury on December 14th.

 

1987:

On Severnside - two were seen on January 3rd with five present on the 4th. Five were also noted on February 24th; In the second winter period also on Severnside in December - two noted on the 2nd, two on the 8th - 9th and c.35 on the 13th.

 

1986:

One at Oldbury Power Station on January 13th; Nine flew north east past Aust and single bird was logged on Northwick Warth on February 14th; Several birds were heard over Thornbury on March 27th.

 

1985:

Seven were seen on Northwick Warth on January 20th with single birds noted on February 17th, 23rd - 24th and March 2nd; Two skeins of twenty-two and eleven flew north east over Northwick Warth on December 29th.

 

1984:

On Severnside six flew north east on January 20th, twelve west across the estuary on March 17th, seven were seen on November 16th, three on December 2nd with fourteen on the 16th and 21st.

 

1983:

Two were present at Oldbury Power Station on January 9th; Single birds were noted on Northwick Warth on February 27th and March 14th; A skein of 95 were counted over St. Catherine's Valley on February 13th; On Severnside - birds were noted from November 12th to December 18th with counts of eleven on November 18th and in December fourteen on the 7th and fifteen on the 18th; At Oldbury Power Station two were noted on November 13th with one on the 27th.

 

1982:

On Severnside - birds were noted up to February 2nd with maximum counts of forty-three heading north east on January 1st and fifty noted feeding on January 19th; At Hallen 125 were counted on January 14th with thirty-three present on the 15th; Sixteen were reported from the Compton Greenfield area on January 19th; One flew west over Rudgeway on March 23rd; Two were seen on Northwick Warth on December 30th.

 

1981:

On Severnside  - a 1st winter was present from February 1st  until April 9th; In December, nine noted grazing  on the 4th, five in flight on the 13th, twenty-four on the 14th, seventeen on the 17th, nineteen on the 27th and one on the 28th; Fifty-five were seen in flight at Oldbury-on-Severn on December 13th.

 

1980:

One was seen near Severn Beach on January 19th, two in the same area on April 4th and one on 6th - 7th; twenty-nine were counted in flight over Yate on January 30th; In November - one was seen between Severn Beach and Aust on the 8th, 15th, 30th and one noted further up the estuary at Shepperdine on the 11th.

 

1979:

107 were counted on Northwick Warth on January 1st, fifty-seven, including eight immature birds, on the 27th and 150 there on February 13th; Fifty were noted at Yate on January 15th; fifty-six present on Littleton Warth on January 28th; In December - two were seen in the Northwick/ Aust Warth area on the 20th with six there on the 22nd.

 

1978:

A juvenile was reported on Northwick Warth on December 2nd.

 

1977:

On Northwick Warth - an immature was seen on April 15th - 16th with another in the same area on December 4th & 10th.

 

1976:

Four were present on Aust Warth on February 1st; Three were noted at New Passage on October 31st; At Severn Beach - five were seen on November 14th with eight present on the 20th; In December also at Severn Beach, five were seen in flight south west and eleven flew north west on the 25th.

 

1975:

Three flew north east over Hallen on February 2nd.

 

1973:

Thirty-eight were seen at Wick on January 25th; At Aust, fifty-one flew north east on January 6th with fifteen present on December 1st.

 

1971:

A flock of thirty were seen and five or six flocks were heard in foggy conditions near Severn Beach on January 3rd; Very small numbers were reported from Littleton-on-Severn and Northwick Warth in December.

 

1970:

Flocks of eighty and twenty were counted over Filton in early January; At Severn Beach, seven were seen on February 1st and thirteen present there on December 25th.

 

1969:

Fifty were seen in flight over Coalpit Heath on January 5th; At Charfield two flocks of fifty and twenty-two were counted on January 11th.

 

1963:

A small flock was seen in flight over Filton between January and March.

 

1960:

Nine were seen in flight up-river at Oldbury on January 10th & 26th and at Shepperdine on January 16th; Seventeen were noted in flight over Wick on April 12th.

 

1958:

Around 70 were seen flying low over Thornbury on January 5th; Four low overhead between St. George and Hanham on November 25th.

1957:

One, evidently an immature was seen on Yate Common on January 21st.

 

1954:

Sixteen were noted at Hambrook on January 27th.

 

1950:

At least 40 were seen in flight over Dyrham and Stoke Gifford in the second half of December.

 

1947:

c.200 were seen in flight over Chipping Sodbury on January 2nd; Seventeen flew over Stoke Gifford on January 11th; Seventeen were counted near Severn Beach on the January 15th.

 

1943:

Some, and probably all, of a flock of about sixty geese seen overhead near Stoke Gifford on December 18th were, 'by their highly pitched call-notes, clearly referable to this species.

 

1940:

Numbers counted in the Severn Beach area were twenty-one on January 1st, twenty-five on January 26th, c.20 on February 2nd & 4th; Two were shot near Severn Beach on January 30th; A flight of seventy were noted over Severn Beach on February 11th.

 

1938:

About fifty 'Grey Geese', most probably this species, were seen on the Severn bank near Severn Beach on December 24th. This is the first documented reference to this species in S. Gloucestershire.
