2017:

Sixty-four bird days were logged this year from eight sites; Aust Warth (37 - 22 in January), Oldbury Power Station (10), New Passage/ Northwick Warth/ Pilning Wetland, Littleton Warth and Marshfield (4), Chittening Warth and Yate (2) and Hanham (1). The best month was January with 36. EARLIEST: One seen on Pilning Wetland on October 25th. LATEST: One was reported along the R. Avon, Hanham on June 24th. HIGHEST COUNT: Seven noted from Aust Warth on January 5th.

 

2016:

A hundred and one bird days were logged this year from seven sites; New Passage/ Northwick Warth/ Pilning Wetland (59), Aust Warth (18), Oldbury Power Station (10), Littleton Warth (6), Severn Beach (4), Yate (3) and Marshfield (1). The best months were October (33) and November (31). EARLIEST: One was seen on Pilning Wetland on September 26th. LATEST: One was displaced by the rising tide from Aust Warth on April 8th. HIGHEST COUNT: A good count of eight from Butts Pool, Pilning Wetland on October 24th.

 

2015:

There were fifty-seven bird days logged this year with birds most often seen on Aust Warth. EARLIEST: Two were reported by several observers on Pilning Wetland on October 3rd. LATEST: A fresh corpse was found on Pilning Wetland on May 25th. HIGHEST COUNT: Seven were counted from Aust Warth on December 5th.

 

2014:

There were ninety-six bird days recorded this year with January (21), October (25) and December (27) being the best months. EARLIEST: Two were seen in the Northwick Warth/ Pilning Wetland area on September 26th. LATEST: One was noted at Severn Beach on pools near the railway line on March 16th. HIGHEST COUNT: Nine were counted on Aust Warth on October 19th with nine logged there on December 26th.

 

2013:

EARLIEST: One was seen on Northwick Warth on September 28th. LATEST:  Two were flushed from Lagoon III at Oldbury Power Station on March 30th. HIGHEST COUNT: Four were flushed from waste ground at Shire Way, Yate on January 1st and a further four from the salt marsh at Severn Beach on January 6th.

 

2012:

EARLIEST: One was seen on Littleton Warth on October 19th. LATEST: Three were flushed by the rising tide at Aust Warth on March 17th. HIGHEST COUNT: Twelve were logged at Aust Warth on December 26th.

 

2011:

EARLIEST: One flushed from Northwick Warth late afternoon on September 26th. LATEST: One was seen on Aust Warth on March 20th. HIGHEST COUNT: Four were counted on Yate Common at lunchtime on February 22nd.

 

2010:

EARLIEST: One flushed from Northwick Warth/ New Passage on October 2nd. LATEST: One was seen at Severn Beach on March 21st. HIGHEST COUNT: Three  were noted on Northwick Warth on November 28th.

 

2009:

EARLIEST: Up to three were flushed from Northwick Warth on October 2nd. LATEST: Four were seen at Orchard Pools, Severn Beach on March 13th. HIGHEST COUNT: Nine were counted on Northwick Warth on February 27th.

 

2008:

EARLIEST: One was reported on Aust Warth in the evening on October 18th. LATEST: One was noted on Northwick Warth on April 6th. HIGHEST COUNT: Seven were counted on Northwick Warth at 09:30 on February 11th.

 

2007:

EARLIEST: One was seen on Northwick Warth on September 29th. LATEST: One was seen on Northwick Warth on April 14th. HIGHEST COUNT: Three were counted from Lagoon II at Oldbury Power Station on December 15th.

 

2006:

EARLIEST: One was noted at Severn Beach on October 21st. LATEST: One was seen at Shepperdine on March 26th. HIGHEST COUNT: Two birds were counted on Northwick Warth on February 11th and Aust Warth on March 3rd.

 

2005:

EARLIEST: One was seen at Severn Beach on August 26th. LATEST: Six were logged at Oldbury Power Station on March 12th. HIGHEST COUNT: Six were counted at Oldbury Power Station on March 12th.

 

2004:

EARLIEST: One was flushed at Severn Beach on November 3rd. LATEST: One was seen at Northwick Warth on February 7th.

 

2003:

EARLIEST: One was seen at Grebe Pond on Northwick Warth on November 9th. LATEST: One was seen on the salt marsh at Severn Beach on February 28th. HIGHEST COUNT: Five were counted at Grebe Pond on Northwick Warth on November 22nd.

 

2002:

FEBRUARY: One was seen at Severn Beach on the 17th. MARCH: Four were counted at Oldbury Power Station on the 3rd; Single birds sere logged at Grebe Pond on Northwick Warth on the 2nd, 3rd and 30th. OCTOBER: Two were seen at Littleton Warth on the 19th. DECEMBER: Two were one again noted from Littleton Warth on the 21st.

 

2001:

OLDBURY POWER STATION: Two in January, seven in February, one in November and one in December.

 

2000:

OLDBURY POWER STATION: Eight in January and  February, four in March and in April and one in December.

 

1999:

OLDBURY POWER STATION: One in January, six on February 18th, two in March, three in April with four in November and December.

 

1998:

OLDBURY POWER STATION: Three on January 1st, two on January 17th, one on February 14th and one on March 14th.

 

1997:

OLDBURY POWER STATION: One on November 3rd, three on December 6th and one on December 14th.

 

1996:

One noted at Littleton Warth on March 3rd.

 

1995:

One on January 12th at Littleton Warth; One at Northwick Warth on April 5th.

 

1994:

Single birds in the Oldbury Power Station/ Littleton area on February 21st, October 10th and November 1st.

 

1991:

One from both Littleton and Olveston sometime in the first winter period; One from Littleton sometime in the second winter period.

 

1989:

Single birds on five dates from Northwick Warth up to March 27th; One at Northwick Warth on November 26th; One at Oldbury Power Station on December 10th.

 

1988:

One at Oldbury Power Station on September 25th; One at Northwick Warth on October 29th and November 12th.

 

1987:

One at Severn Beach sometime in the first winter period; One at Northwick Warth on November 13th.

 

1985:

One or two from Aust in April, October and December.

 

1984:

One at Hallen sometime in February.

 

1983:

One from Monkswood Reservoir south of Cold Ashton sometime this year.

 

1980:

One from Oldbury Power Station on December 13th; Birds seen occasionally at Northwick Warth from October 24th onwards.

 

1979:

One at Littleton Warth on March 13th; Noted occasionally at Aust up to March 4th and again from October 8th onwards.

 

1978:

Up to three at Aust Warth until March 18th with several from October 22nd until the year end.

 

1977:

Five were seen at Aust Warth on January 1st with ten present on January 22nd plus birds noted there until March 6th. One or two at the same site from October 9th onwards.

 

1976:

Up to eight were seen at Aust Warth until March 13th with several from October 2nd until the year end.

 

1975:

Up to twelve birds noted at Aust Warth until March 15th with up to six from October 25th.

 

1973:

Individuals at Aust in February, March and December.

 

1972:

One at Aust some time in January with one there on December 24th.

 

1971:

One from Yate Rocks on August 30th.

 

1943:

Two flushed from marshy ground adjoining Dyrham Wood on December 13th.

 

1941:

A single bird was 'obtained' on marshy ground adjoining Dyrham Wood on December 23rd.

 

1940:

One was seen at Stoke Gifford on October 5th with another at the same site on November 11th.

 

1935:

One was 'obtained' at Stoke Gifford in December of this year. This is the first documented reference to this species in S. Gloucestershire.
