The first butterflies of the year (Red Admirals - one putative, one definite) were reported from Coalpit Heath and Mangotsfield.

A Small White was discovered in a kitchen at a private address in Yate today!

Monday 7th
Small Tortoiseshell noted at Tubbs Bottom, Frampton End.
Thursday 10th
Small Tortoiseshell in a garden at Longwell Green and a Red Admiral in Kingsgate Park, Yate.
Saturday 12th
A Peacock, the first of the year, was noted in a Thornbury garden today.
Monday 14th
On the wing today; Comma at Yate and Oldland Common and Brimstone at Oldland Common, Longwell Green and Oldbury Power Station.

Thursday 17th
On show today were several Small Tortoiseshell at Chipping Sodbury Common and Thornbury plus Peacock and Brimstone at Tubbs Bottom, Frampton Cotterell.
Friday 18th
The first Holly Blue of the year was seen in Bradley Stoke today! It represents the earliest ever record for this species in S. Gloucestershire! The previous earliest date was March 24th 2017 in at Alveston.

Noted on the wing across the recording area in recent days was Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Comma, Small White and Red Admiral.

Both White Admiral and Silver-washed Fritillary showing well at Lower Woods, Wickwar today.

A Silver-washed Fritillary was seen along the main rhine bridleway at Oldbury Power Station.
Saturday 9th
Silver-washed Fritillary noted at Wapley Bushes LNR, Yate. Also today Purple Hairstreak were seen at both Wapley Bushes LNR, Yate and in the Willsbridge Valley (3).
Wednesday 13th
Lower Woods: Many Silver-washed Fritillary including a valezina form, three skipper species Small, Essex and Large, many Ringlets, Meadow Browns, four Marbled White and two Holly Blue.

Lower Woods: Silver-washed Fritillary plus 'valezina' and White Admiral. Horton Bushes: Sixteen species of butterfly - best were four Silver-washed Fritillary. NB: An unconfirmed report of Wood White from Horton Bushes today but despite and extensive search could not be relocated.

The first record of Silver-washed Fritillary at Kingsgate Park, Yate - near the Scott Way entrance! Both Essex & Small Skipper were on the wing at Wapley Bushes LNR, Yate this afternoon.

New for the year today was Clouded Yellow with one present at Oldbury Power Station. Many Silver-washed Fritillary including at least two 'valezina' forms at Lower Woods, Wickwar. Also several Purple Hairstreak, Comma, Peacock and Brimstone. A Clouded Yellow still present at Oldbury Power Station.

One, probably two, male CHALK-HILL BLUE were found (by Mark Coller) in hillside meadows below Bangel Wood between Upper Kilcott and Hawkesbury Upton. A significant find and the first to be seen in S. Glos since individuals were recorded from the Rangeworthy area on August 17th 2004.
