I went after the Quail this evening at 19:00 and took Down Road going north. On getting out of my car near Downthorns Farm I immediately heard Quail the fields there, then another in a barley/ wheat field to the south, then I think a third Quail in the edges of a cut field. In the next ten minutes there were just a few more calls. I then went south to the public footpath (Down Track) and gave it ten minutes but heard nothing from there. (Hugh Maynard)

It’s nice to report 110 Golden Plovers circling over fields just south of the M4 junction 18 (A46 to Bath) this evening at 17:45, many of them resplendent in summer plumage. They landed briefly in a grassy field but took off again at once - I imagine they were spooked by the constant noise of fast traffic on the A46. After about 15 minutes they flew east in a couple of loose 'V' formations, probably to find a quieter roost site somewhere north of Marshfield. Presumably they are on the way north, since I’ve only seen occasional groups of about 25 birds around the Cotswold edge this winter. (Jane Cumming)
