Friday 1st

Combined reports: 30+ Fieldfare, Redwing, Pied and Grey Wagtail, Kestrel, Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer, Linnet, Common Buzzard, 20 Common Gull, Robin, Blackbird, Starling, 20 Jackdaw and 40 Carrion Crow. Saturday 2nd

Combined reports: Northfield and Rushmead Lanes. Two Common Buzzard, Merlin, c.180 Common Gull, 40 Skylark, three Pied Wagtail, seven Common Stonechat, Fieldfare, 40 Corn Bunting, 30 Yellowhammer, 60+ Chaffinch, 80 Linnet, 100 Starling, 200+ Corvid and four Raven. Sunday 3rd

Combined reports: Four Kestrel, seven Common Buzzard, Stock Dove, 80 Yellowhammers, 80 Corn Bunting, c.200 Linnet, c.400 mixed Corvids, ten Golden Plover, c.100 Fieldfare, c.100 Redwing, Green Woodpecker, Jay, Jack Snipe and two Mistle Thrush. (Karle Burford, John)

 

Monday 4th

Eight Mallard on West Littleton Dam. Generally, several Common Buzzard, Kestrel, Common Pheasant, Black-headed, Common and Herring Gull, Stock Dove, Woodpigeon, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Pied Wagtail, Wren, Robin, several Common Stonechat, Blackbird, Fieldfare, Redwing, Blue Tit, several hundred Corvid, c.1000 Starling, House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Linnet, Yellowhammer and Corn Bunting.

 

Tuesday 5th

A Mute Swan flew over Church's Pond,  Continental Chaffinch amongst a group of c.120 Chaffinch on Down Road c.20 Yellowhammer, Continental Song Thrush seen in several places including Cloud Wood, Down Road and Rushmead Farm, a real influx Continental Blackbird with individuals in Cloud Wood and Rushmead Farm. Across the patch, 150+ Common Gull, four Black-headed Gull from Northfield Lane; Common Stonechat from Northfield Lane with two on Rushmead Farm, a slight increase in Fieldfare numbers and a Little Grebe on Church's Pond. Wednesday 6th

Common Teal on Dunsdown Pond, Siskin and c.20 Yellowhammer from Castle Farm and Copse, three Common Stonechat and Merlin from West Littleton Road and three Kestrel in the area. C.120 Chaffinch and c.120 Goldfinch near the village. (John)

 

Thursday 7th

Fifty Skylark from Down Track, six Grey Heron and four Grey Wagtail in the Shire Valley and 30 Fieldfare from the Tormarton Road. (John)

 

Friday 8th

Greenfinch in the Withymead area, Marsh Tit, two lesser Redpoll and 30 Redwing in the Marshfield Wood area, Marsh Tit, Mute Swan and five Mallard from Church's Pond, two Bullfinch from Cherry Wood, another Marsh Tit from Cloud Wood, Sparrowhawk a few Redwing and c.40 Fieldfare from the Ringswell area. Saturday 9th

Dunsdown Lane area, two Reed Bunting, 200+ Linnet, c.50 Yellowhammer, Common Snipe, Jack Snipe and Mistle Thrush. Two Continental Song Thrush from Middledown Lane, c.120 Chaffinch from Castle Farm and c.80 Fieldfare from Northfield Lane. (John)

 

Sunday 10th

Two Reed Bunting with c.30 Yellowhammer on West Littleton Down, Common Snipe and Marsh Tit in the Castle Farm Copse area from West Littleton Road, six Grey Heron, one on West Littleton Dam and a further five in the Shire Valley, two Mistle thrush, four Continental Song Thrush and c.60 Golden Plover over Shirehill Lane. Twelve Red-legged Partridge and c.100 Yellowhammer from Rushmead Farm. (John)

 

Tuesday 12th

Two Lesser Black-backed Gull from the Castle Farm area and two Common Stonechat from Middledown Lane. Barn Owl, Little Owl from the West Littleton Road area also Merlin and 20 Corn Bunting from Northfield Lane. (John)

 

Thursday 14th

C.150 Redwing near Ringswell Dewpond, Peregrine near Garston Farm, Little Egret at Church Pond along with Mistle Thrush and Little Grebe. (John)

 

Friday 15th

Rushmead Farm; c.200 Linnet, c.80 Yellowhammer, c.70 Corn Bunting and c.50 Skylark. (John)

 

Saturday 16th

C.140 Fieldfare, six Continental Blackbird and c.100 Chaffinch in the Castle Farm Copse area. Moorhen and Grey Heron in the Shire Valley, c.60 Skylark and 30 Yellowhammer from Down Road, c.230 Linnet and c.70 Yellowhammer by the allotments on the Tormarton Road. (John)

 

Sunday 17th

Two Kestrel and 'singing' Stock Dove noted. A small male Merlin from Middledown Lane with possibly up to three individuals noted across the patch, two Continental Blackbird and Common Stonechat from Wallsend Lane, c.130 Yellowhammer just north of West Littleton with c.20 Chaffinch and Reed Bunting plus 20 Yellowhammer on West Littleton Down. Monday 18th

Little Grebe, two Common Stonechat and Marsh Tit from Church's Pond with a further Marsh Tit in Cherry Wood. Three Mistle Thrush, 21 Golden Plover, c.130 Chaffinch and Great Spotted Woodpecker in the Ashwicke area and 44 Pied Wagtail in ploughed fields from Rushmead Lane. (John)

 

Tuesday 19th

A Common Stonechat from Northfield Lane, c.550 Linnet in two groups from Rushmead Farm and from Down Track, c.50 Skylark, c.120 Chaffinch, 20+ Yellowhammer and c.120 Fieldfare. (John)

 

Thursday 21st

Church's Pond; Little Grebe, singing Song Thrush and ten Meadow Pipit. Marshfield Wood; Marsh Tit. Ashwicke area; c.100 Redwing and ten Goldfinch. (John)

 

Friday 22nd

In the Shire Valley; Grey heron, Siskin and Treecreeper singing, near the Allotments on the Tormarton Road, 50 Yellowhammer and 30 Corn Bunting from West Littleton Road, 80 Fieldfare and a few Redwing, from Northfield Lane 30 Yellowhammer. Common Stonechat noted from the Tormarton Road, Northfield Lane with two from West Littleton Road. A calling Tawny Owl overnight from Marshfield village. (John)

 

Saturday 23rd

Five Lapwing noted in flight over West Littleton, 25 Meadow Pipit and c.80 Redwing from Middledown Lane, c.150 Chaffinch/ Linnet/ Yellowhammer from Dunsdown Lane and a Greenfinch in the village. (John)

 

Sunday 24th

Good numbers of thrush in the Ashwicke area including six Continental Blackbird, lots of Redwing and Fieldfare and a group of 25 Meadow Pipit. (John)

 

Monday 25th

Rushmead Farm: 600+ Skylark, c.250 Linnet, 30 Yellowhammer, 20 Chaffinch, Common Stonechat and 22 Golden Plover over. Down Track: 50 Skylark. Northfield Lane area: Common Stonechat, c.70 Yellowhammer, 25 Chaffinch and 30 Skylark. (John)

 

Tuesday 26th

A Little Grebe, Little Egret, Sparrowhawk and a couple of Mistle Thrushes at Church pond and a male Blackcap in the garden. (John)

 

Thursday 28th

A Jack Snipe and c.100 Fieldfare from Dunsdown Pool/ Lane, four Common Stonechat on West Littleton Down, singing Chaffinch and two Greenfinch in the village. In addition for the botanists out there, a patch of Winter Aconite in West Littleton churchyard. In 'Flowers of the Bristol Region' this was recorded at only 2 sites. Very rare this far west and a lovely sight on a gloomy day! (John)

 

Friday 29th

Rushmead Lane; c.40 Corn Bunting and two Common Stonechat. Shire Valley: Common Stonechat, c.60 Redwing and two Marsh Tit. Down Road; c.140 Skylark. Church Pond; Little Grebe, Mute Swan and five male Mallard. Larids were conspicuous by their absence! (John)

 

Saturday 30th

40 Corn Bunting from Northfield Lane and another c.80 on Rough Ground at the junction of Tormarton Road and Rushmead Lane. (John)

 

Sunday 31st

A Water Rail was heard calling several times in the marsh on Brookhouse Lane, also several Continental Blackbird, 50+ Lesser Black-backed and a couple of Herring Gull drifting east in a half hour period. In the village four (two pairs) Greenfinch and 30+ Goldfinch from Middledown Lane. A Peregrine from the Dunsdown Lane area plus 120+ Yellowhammer, c.40 Chaffinch, three Reed Bunting and 30 Redwing. c.90 Fieldfare from West Littleton Road. (John)


FEBRUARY 2021

 

Monday 1st

A Little Grebe still present on Church's Pond, two Herring Gull on Garston Farm, c.60 Fieldfare/ Redwing and Marsh Tit around Ringswell, 25 Yellowhammer at Ashwicke and a Lesser Redpoll from Cherry Wood. (John Barnett)

 

Wednesday 3rd

Two Common Stonechat and c.200 Linnet from Rushmead Farm, 40 Chaffinch on Rough Ground, five Greenfinch in the Village plus Marsh Tit and Bullfinch in the Ringswell dew pond area. (John)

 

Thursday 4th

Two Lesser Black-backed Gull and three Common Stonechat from the Tormarton Road, Stock Dove singing in the Shire Valley and Song Thrush singing everywhere! (John)

 

Sunday 7th

Sixty-two Golden Plover from West Littleton Down, at least 200 Yellowhammer and Chaffinch plus a Brambling from Dunsdown Lane, c.80 Chaffinch at Castle Farm and at least six Greenfinch in the Marshfield churchyard area. (John)

 

Monday 8th

Shire Valley; two Grey Heron, two Great Spotted Woodpecker, three Grey Wagtail, Treecreeper, several Continental Blackbird and c.50 Chaffinch/ Goldfinch. Tormarton Road; two Common Stonechat plus huge numbers of Jackdaw/ Rook with well over a thousand birds. Northfield Lane; 25 Chaffinch. (John)

 

Tuesday 9th

Rushmead Farm; Red Kite, two Lesser Black-backed Gull, Common Gull, at least 100 Fieldfare, a few Redwing, Common Stonechat, c.70 Chaffinch, over 300 Linnet, c.80 Yellowhammer, c.170 Corn Bunting and in excess of 2000 Corvids. From Rushmead Lane twelve Pied Wagtail and Continental Song Thrush. Around the Allotments; 40 Skylark, Yellowhammer and Kestrel. (John)

 

Wednesday 10th

Church's Pool: Little Grebe and two Mistle Thrush. Cloud Wood; Marsh Tit and 40 Redwing. Ringswell; several Greenfinch and a Bullfinch. (John)

 

Thursday 11th

Four Lapwing over south-west of the village, at least ten Greenfinch in the village and around Ringswell, at least 40 Goldfinch and three Bullfinch. (John)

 

Friday 12th

From the Marshfield Riviera today; Down Track; Meadow Pipit and c.60 Skylark. Rushmead Farm; 80 Yellowhammer, two Common Stonechat, 50 Linnet, 70 Chaffinch and c.30 Corn Bunting with the various flocks. (John)

 

Saturday 13th

28 Lapwing over West Littleton, two Greenfinch in the churchyard at Marshfield, Common Snipe from Dunsdown Lane. Also, the flock of finches/ buntings on Dunsdown lane has grown to over 250; mainly Yellowhammer c.150, Chaffinch c.80, three Reed Bunting and newly joined by c.20 Corn Bunting. (John)

 

Monday 15th

Church Pond; Little Grebe and two Greenfinch. Dunsdown Lane; c.120 Fieldfare, Yellowhammer/ Chaffinch/ Corn Bunting flock of c.250 still there. Castle Farm; 100+ Chaffinch and a few Yellowhammer. Rushmead Lane; 40 Corn Bunting and several singing Skylark. (John)

 

Tuesday 16th

Shire Valley; Three Grey Heron, two Mistle Thrush, 24 Meadow Pipit, Marsh Tit and Corn Bunting singing, back again this year. Two Common Stonechat from West Littleton Road. (John)

 

Wednesday 17th

Northfield Lane; five Lesser Black-backed Gulls over, c.80 Fieldfare and two Common Stonechat. Rushmead Farm; 45 Linnet with Skylark and Corn Bunting singing everywhere! There's been a marked dispersal in the last couple of days. (John)

 

Thursday 18th

Little Grebe on Church Pond, Marsh Tit and 30 Redwing in Marshfield Wood including one singing. c.100 Redwing and six Mistle Thrush at Ashwicke. Raven and Common Buzzard in Cherry Wood and a Bullfinch singing at Ringswell. (John) In addition a Barn Owl was seen from a moving vehicle crossing west over the A46 near Marshfield Bakery. Friday 19th

West Littleton Road; two Common Stonechat and 28 Corn Bunting. Dunsdown Lane; 16 Yellowhammer, c.90 Chaffinch a few Corn Bunting, at least ten Fieldfare and 30 Redwing. Wallsend Lane; 43 Golden Plover, West Littleton Down; seven Lesser Black-backed, two Herring and an adult Yellow-legged Gull! (John)

 

Saturday 20th

Shire Valley; 25 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and two Mistle Thrush. Down Road; two Red-legged Partridge, lots of singing Skylark and two Meadow Pipit. Tormarton Road; 55 Fieldfare. (John)

 

Sunday 21st

South-west of Marshfield; Red-legged Partridge, several singing Song Thrush, 20 Redwing and several Greenfinch. Middledown Lane area; three Common Snipe, 20 Lesser Black-backed Gull with a couple of Herring Gull, five Stock Dove, lots of Skylark and Corn Bunting singing plus Bullfinch. Castle Farm; c.100 Chaffinch/ Yellowhammer. (John)

 

Monday 22nd

Shirehill Lane; c.150 Lesser Black-backed/ Herring Gull; roughly equal in number and nearly all adult plus two Common Stonechat. Rushmead Farm; two Common Stonechat, c.100 Chaffinch, Linnet c.400, c.100 Yellowhammer and c.50 Corn Bunting. Rushmead Lane; c.100 Linnet/ Corn Bunting. (John)

 

Tuesday 23rd

Around forty species across the patch this morning; Grey Heron, several Mallard, five Canada Geese, several Common Buzzard, three Kestrel, Common Pheasant, Common, Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gull, Stock Dove, Woodpigeon, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, Skylark, Pied and Grey Wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Fieldfare, three Mistle Thrush, Long-tailed, Blue and Great Tit, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Magpie, Rook, Carrion Crow, Raven, c.600 Starling, House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Linnet, Yellowhammer and Corn Bunting.

Down Road; two Common Stonechat. Wallsend Lane; 18 Golden Plover. (John)

 

Saturday 27th

Rushmead Lane; Ten Common Buzzards, 200+ Gulls - Black-headed (30), Herring, Common but mainly Lesser Black-backed and c.30 Pied Wagtail. A pair of Bullfinch were present at Ringswell. (John)

 

Sunday 28th

Church Pond; Two Little Egret and Grey Heron. Cherry Wood; Five Common Buzzard, two Raven, two Mistle Thrush, three Canada Geese over and Bullfinch. West Littleton Pond; Five Canada Geese. Rushmead Lane; A conservative estimate of 800 gulls in field being ploughed; c.300 each of Herring and Lesser-black-backed with most of the rest Black-headed. (John)

Monday 1st

Brookhouse Lane; c.150 Fieldfare including a couple in sub-song plus 20 Redwing. Middledown Lane; Nine Stock Dove and Kestrel. Dunsdown Lane; c.120 Chaffinch/ Yellowhammer, Mistle Thrush and two Moorhen on Dunsdown Pond. (John Barnett)

 

Tuesday 2nd

Shire Valley; Red Kite, c.150 Redwing, a number of Fieldfare and four Pied Wagtail. (Nigel Kempson)

 

Wednesday 3rd

Church Pond area; Two Grey Heron, Marsh Tit and Mistle Thrush. Garston Farm; 12 Meadow Pipit. Down Road; Over 1000 gulls a fairly even spread of Black-headed, Herring, Lesser Black-backed and Common. Rushmead Farm; Chaffinch/ Yellowhammer - a small flock of 20, c.130 Fieldfare, c.60 Redwing, c.120 Linnet, c.80 Corn Bunting. A Blackcap in sub-song in a village garden! (John)

 

Thursday 4th

Wallsend Lane; c.70 Chaffinch/ Yellowhammer, 15 Golden Plover and Common Stonechat. Dunsdown Lane Pond: Still two Common Chiffchaff. West Littleton Dam; Five Canada Geese. (John)

 

Friday 5th

In the Shire Valley; A Lesser Spotted Woodpecker was both seen and heard, also there two Mistle Thrush and two Grey Heron. Two Common Stonechat on Rushmead Farm. (John)

 

Saturday 6th

Shire Valley; Two Grey Heron, four Mistle Thrush and two Common Snipe. Rushmead Lane; c.400 gulls, mainly Black-headed and two Common Stonechat. Stock Dove - definitely more around this year both singing and in flight. Fieldfare - a combined total of c.330 but only a few Redwing. Dunsdown Lane; Yellowhammer flock c.80 with a few Chaffinch with another flock of c.60 near Middledown Lane. (John)

 

Sunday 7th

Church Pond; Five male Mallard. Ringswell area; 40 Redwing in trees in noisy sub-song and two Common Chiffchaff. Ashwicke; Six Common Buzzard, three Raven and Tawny Owl calling. West Littleton Pond; Five Canada Geese, five Mallard, Moorhen and Grey Heron. Mistle Thrush and Blackcap singing in our garden! (John)

 

Tuesday 9th

C.45 species noted across the patch today; Shire Valley; Red Kite and Little Egret. Northfield Lane; Linnet c.80.  Tormarton Road; Fieldfare c.90. Church Pond; Common Chiffchaff and two Mistle Thrush. Also Grey Heron, two Mallard, Kestrel, Common Pheasant, Red-legged Partridge, Moorhen, Black-headed, Common, Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Stock Dove, Woodpigeon, Green Woodpecker, Skylark. Meadow Pipit, two Grey and c.20 Pied Wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Redwing, Long-tailed, Blue and Great Tit, Nuthatch, Magpie, Jackdaw, Rook, Carrion Crow, Raven, Starling, House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Yellowhammer and Corn Bunting. Friday 12th

Shire Valley; Little Egret, three Grey Heron, three Mistle Thrush, three Common Chiffchaff and two Green Woodpecker. Rushmead Lane; At least 400 Starling. Northfield Lane; Kestrel and c.50 Linnet. (John)

 

Sunday 14th/ Monday 15th

Sunday; Marsh Tit in Cherry Wood and Common Chiffchaff at Ringswell. Monday; Two Canada Goose on West Littleton Dam, Merlin from the Tormarton Road, Red Kite, 380 Woodpigeon, c.60 Chaffinch, a few Yellowhammer and a female Brambling from Wallsend Lane. (John)

 

Wednesday 17th

The third ever Black Redstart, a female/ 1st winter, was seen well in and around Orchid Lane (off Rushmead Lane) today! Also of note: from Rushmead Farm, several Raven, Sparrowhawk and Red Kite with two Canada Geese still present on West Littleton Dam. (John Barnett)

A singing Blackcap in a Marshfield garden. Cherry Wood and watch point; Five Common Buzzard, two Sparrowhawk, Raven, Marsh Tit, 40 Redwing and two Mistle Thrush. Rushmead Lane; Six Common Buzzard and Red Kite. West Littleton Dam; Five Canada Geese. (John)

 

Monday 22nd

Rushmead Lane; Red Kite, c.100 Linnet and 25 Yellowhammer. C.70 Linnet from Northfield Lane. West Littleton Dam; five Canada Geese still. Across the patch; s few Meadow Pipit, two Common Chiffchaff, ≥ 100 Fieldfare and a few Redwing. Two Greenfinch on feeders in the village. Also the same or another Red Kite from Down Road. Two Canada Geese on West Littleton Dam, Common Stonechat from Northfield Lane, a male Northern Wheatear (the first of the year) from Down Road, 40 Linnet on Rushmead Farm with a further 60 on Northfield Lane. (John Barnett, Pete Coslett)

Two Canada Geese on West Littleton Dam, Grey Heron and two Mistle Thrush in the Shire Valley, three Common Chiffchaff at Ringswell and twenty Yellowhammer from Down Road. (John)

 

Saturday 27th

Two Canada Geese on West Littleton Dam, three Red-legged Partridge on West Littleton Down, at least one Common Chiffchaff in virtually every sheltered clump of bushes, four (two male and two female) Northern Wheatear on Rushmead Lane, c.120 Linnet and twenty Yellowhammer on Rushmead Farm and two Yellowhammer at Ringswell for the first time ever! Monday 29th

Female Merlin on Rushmead Lane along with three Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, at least a dozen Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Pied Wagtail, ten House Sparrow, at least ten Yellowhammer, 20+Linnet and ten Corn Bunting. Tuesday 30th

Northern Wheatear on Orchid Lane with another from Northfield Lane. Plenty of Skylark and Corn Bunting singing also 10+ Yellowhammer, three Meadow Pipit, 20 Linnet, 7+ Common Buzzard and Raven. Also reported, a Common Redstart from Orchid Lane.

 

Wednesday 31st

Two Canada Geese on West Littleton Dam and two more on Small Pond in the Shire Valley. Also in the Shire Valley, Swallow, three Green Woodpecker, four Mistle Thrush, lots of Common Chiffchaff, several Blackcap and Grey Heron. (John Barnett)
