30th: |
We had a nice outing today in Marshfield. We started off in the Doncombe Valley area and Ringswell Common hoping to see the Hawfinch. Unfortunately we didn't see any, but we did see the following: Redwing 6, Great Spotted Woodpecker 3, Marsh Tit, Long-tailed Tit 15, Coal Tit 2, Stonechat 3, Bullfinch, Grey Wagtail 2, Treecreeper and Green Woodpecker. All of the common birds and finches were about in plentiful numbers including the Yellowhammers. Next we headed to the other side of the A420 and saw the following: Along the east side of Down Road there were 200+ Fieldfare, and 30+ Golden Plover (some were down behind the crest of the little hill so full numbers were hard to estimate from the road). On the rest of the patch we saw two more Stonechat, 17 Red-legged Partridge, 10 Redwing, Stonechat, Song Thrush and Mistle Thrush. Also ten Corn Bunting on 'Rough Ground' on the north-east corner of Rushmead Lane. We thought that we saw four Quail flush and drop back down over a wall, but we could not relocate them. The jizz and behaviour seemed right but we were not totally sure. They were along Rushmead Lane just above where there is an unfinished barn made of red metal beams. (Terry Mason) |
|

Decided to have a walk around the lanes north of Marshfield on this afternoon and was amazed by the sheer numbers of birds in the fields especially at the east end of Rushmead Lane where many birds looked as if hey might roost in the small copse by the pig farm. A Hawfinch was showing well on Ringswell Common on the south side of Marshfield this morning. This is the third bird to be seen in this valley in a week, the previous two were a bright male and a female. The pale bill on this individual suggests a male and it was clearly a much duller bird than the first male. |
