An unconfirmed report of one from The
Hacket, Cleve Wood (ST: 65 89) near
Thornbury on April 17th; A wholly
unconfirmed report of one along Broadmead
Brook in the Shire Valley on December 29th.
2019
JANUARY: One heard drumming several times in
the Doncombe Valley at Ringswell south of
Marshfield village on the 22nd. DECEMBER: An
unconfirmed report of one with a tit flock
on the south-west side of Lagoon II at
Oldbury Power Station around the 9th.
2018
A male at close range near the Little River
Avon in the Damery area on March 31st.
2017
A presumed male was heard calling at Lower
Woods, Wickwar on May 8th.
2016
One putatively this species was heard
drumming from Splatt's Abbey Wood, Filton at
08:00 on February 29th.
2014
One putatively this species was reported in
flight over The Scop at Almondsbury on
November 22nd.
2013
A male was seen on January 26th at Severn
Beach.
2012
A male was heard both calling and drumming
at Lower Woods, Inglestone Common on April
6th; One, possibly this species, was
reported from Inglestone Common on April
17th; One was reported from Bickley Woods,
Longwell Green on September 6th; One was
seen at 12:30 in Little Green Lane at Severn
Beach on December 5th; A male was seen
briefly at 10:15 at New Passage on December
17th before flying inland.
2011
A male was heard drumming and calling at
07:00 at the east end of Gunning's Wood in
the Shire Valley at Marshfield on April 9th
and again on the 13th - 14th; A male was
seen at 19:00 on July16th between Avening
Green and Tortworth church; One was seen at
Lower Woods on Inglestone Common on August
2nd.
2007
One was reported in the trees by The Scop at
Almondsbury on April 8th at around 09:40.
2006
Reputedly seen in the Willsbridge Mill area
on and off for the last twelve years with
unconfirmed reports that all three
woodpeckers have been seen regularly in a
Longbeach Road garden simultaneously.
2005
One was heard calling at Golden Valley LNR,
Wick on May 9th.

A female was reported from Lower Woods near
Inglestone Common on July 12th.
2002
One at Orchard Pools near Severn Beach on
July 14th; A female in gardens beneath Aust
Cliffs on October 16th; A female from
Downend on December 25th.

One at Inglestone Common on May 11th; One at
Hollywood Tower near Easter Compton on July
5th; A male at New Passage on July 15th; One
at Severn Beach on August 5th - 6th; One
from Littley Woods near Hawkesbury Upton on
November 21st.

One was seen at Catgrove Wood near Hill on
March 28th; One from Inglestone Common was
seen and heard drumming on May 9th.

One report of a single bird at Easter
Compton on July 1st; A male was seen at
Hanham Hills and watched for around fifteen
minutes at around five metres on August
15th.

Recorded from March through to December with
reports from Inglestone Common and New
Passage. One from Lower Woods, Wickwar
around ST: 742 876 on May 27th.

One was reported from Iron Acton on February
11th; One was noted at Oldbury Power Station
on April 1st; A male was seen at Lower Woods
Lodge on Inglestone Common on June 20th.

A single bird was reported from Hill on May
21st; One at Iron Acton on August 6th.

A single bird was reported from Tockington
on December 24th.

One was trapped, ringed and released
sometime in August at Almondsbury; One was
noted in a railway bank stand of Pines at
Coalpit Heath around ST: 678 803 on October
18th; One was noted from a lightly wooded
pasture in Coalpit Heath around ST: 687 804
on November 22nd.

One was seen in flight heading east at New
Passage sometime in April.

Frenchay on April 7th.

Frequently met with near Stoke Gifford from
March to late July.

Drumming by both sexes was noted at Dyrham
on March 20th and by a male as late as June
17th.

A pair was noted at Little Stoke on various
dates, and in all months, from July to
December.
1942
A single bird were seen at Little Stoke on
February 1st; There were good opportunities
in May and June of watching a nesting pair
in the Dyrham Rectory garden. As winter
'drumming' is apparently not usual, it may
be added that this was heard and seen in the
same garden on various dates during the
extremely mild weather of November and
December.
