The first ever documented
reference to proven breeding in S.
Gloucestershire! During the breeding
season up to fifteen adults raised at least three
chicks on Pilning WR, New Passage.
EARLIEST: Five on Pilning WR, New
Passage on March 19th. LATEST: Two
at New Passage on December 21st.
HIGHEST COUNT: Up to fifteen present
on Pilning WR, New Passage
throughout June plus at least three
well grown chicks.
2019
APRIL: One roosting on edge of the salt
marsh at Severn Beach on the 7th; Two were
present on Northwick Warth 'flash' before
departing north-east on the 18th; Two high
north-east at Severn Beach subsequently past
Oldbury Power Station on the 20th; Four were
seen from Northwick Warth on the 22nd. MAY:
Two were reported in the New Passage/
Northwick Warth area on 13th. JUNE: Three
present in the New Passage/ Northwick area
on the 9th. AUGUST: One was seen briefly
between Thornbury Sailing Club and Pillhead
Gout on the 3rd; Four were noted in the New
Passage/ Northwick Warth area in the
afternoon on the 26th. SEPTEMBER: One in the
New Passage/ Northwick Warth area on the
9th; Four present at New Passage on the
14th. OCTOBER: One was present on Pilning
WR, Northwick Warth on the 1st;
Two present on Northwick Warth from New
Passage and three at Shepperdine on the 7th;
One at New Passage on the 20th; One on
Littleton Warth on the 22nd. DECEMBER: One
in flight and calling, down-river past
Pillhead Gout, Oldbury Power Station on the
17th.
2018
JANUARY: Two birds feeding on the shore by
Lagoon III, Oldbury Power Station on the
14th. MARCH: Six were found on the 16th on
Pilning WR early morning before moving
to New Passage; One in the Northwick Warth
area on the 21st - 22nd. APRIL: Three at
Shepperdine early morning on the 2nd; Two
were present at Thornbury Sailing Club,
Oldbury-on-Severn on the 15th; One was seen
in flight north-east up-river past New
Passage on the 21st; One early morning on
Pilning WR on the 30th. MAY: Two seen
mating on the 17th in the Northwick Warth/
Pilning WR area with one settled on a
'nest' constitutes the first breeding
attempt of this species in South
Gloucestershire. Two still present on the
18th; Three in the Northwick Warth/ Pilning
WR area on the 20th; Two were noted in
the Northwick Warth/ Pilning WR area on
the 25th; One briefly in the New Passage/
Northwick Warth area early morning on the
28th. JUNE: One present on Pilning WR
mid-morning on the 30th. JULY: Four were
present on Northwick Warth on the 4th.
AUGUST: An adult accompanied by four
juveniles in the New Passage/ Northwick
Warth/ Pilning WR area on the 1st with
one in the same area on the 3rd. OCTOBER:
One noted in the New Passage/ Northwick
Warth area and was seen to drop onto the 1st
Sentry Box Pool on the 11th.
2017
APRIL: One was seen at New Passage on the
3rd; One was seen in flight past Oldbury
Power Station on the 15th; One was seen
briefly on Pilning WR on the 29th. MAY:
Two were present briefly on Northwick Warth
on the 3rd with two in flight past New
Passage on the 5th; One circulating around
the New Passage/ Northwick Warth/ Pilning
WR area on the 15th; Two birds present
mid-morning on Northwick Warth on the 22nd.
JULY: One was seen at Shepperdine over high
tide on the 24th, the first July record!
SEPTEMBER: One was reported from the south
side of Littleton Warth at high tide on the
1st; Three were noted in the New Passage/
Northwick Warth/ Pilning WR area on the
17th; Three were noted in the New Passage/
Northwick Warth area on the 25th; One at
Pillhead Gout Oldbury-on-Severn on the 27th.
NOVEMBER: One from Pillhead Gout, Cowhill on
the 1st; Seven in flight down river past
Oldbury Power Station on the 3rd.
2016
JANUARY: A flock of eight were seen actively
feeding on the shore near Thornbury Sailing
Club on the 2nd. MARCH: One was watched from
Northwick and Aust Warth's in the morning on
the 11th; One was present with Redshank at
New Passage early morning on the 20th.
APRIL: Three spent the day in
the New Passage/ Northwick Warth area on the
4th. MAY:
Two were seen on Northwick Warth
'flash' on the
2nd and subsequently Aust Warth on the
2nd; Three were found at 08:55 on
Pilning WR and one was seen in flight
past Oldbury Power Station on the 22nd; One
spent the day on Pilning WR on the
25th; Two were found on Northwick Warth
'flash' on the 30th.
SEPTEMBER: One was present on Northwick
Warth 'flash' on the 25th.
OCTOBER: One was seen on Pilning WR
first thing on the 6th before moving to New
Passage; One was reported from New Passage/
Northwick Warth in the afternoon on the 23rd
still present on Northwick
Warth 'flash' on the 24th; Two were present from the
27th - 31st along the shore in the New
Passage/ Northwick Warth area. NOVEMBER: One
present in the Northwick Warth/ New Passage/
Pilning WR area on the 5th.
2015
MARCH: One on the foreshore on Northwick
Warth from New Passage on the 6th; One was
seen at high tide on the shore at Thornbury
Yacht Club, Oldbury-on-Severn around
Pillhead Gout on the 12th and again in the
same area in the evening on the 19th.
SEPTEMBER: One was seen in the Northwick
Warth/ Pilning WR area on the 11th.
OCTOBER: Two were present seen feeding
around The Pill, New Passage on the 14th.
2014
One on the foreshore on Northwick Warth from
New Passage on March 15th. It relocated to
Oldbury Power Station on the 16th;
Twenty-five in the Northwick/ Aust Warth
area (two combined flocks of twelve and
thirteen in the Cake Pill area) before
heading on upriver on March 30th; Eight at
Shepperdine at 19:30 on March 31st; Two on
June 1st in the New Passage/ Pilning WR
area at 08:55. Then in flight, calling
before heading south; Four at low tide from
the footpath at Shepperdine on September
3rd; Two in the New Passage/ Northwick Warth
area until dusk on September 8th; Three were
seen roosting on the flash on Northwick
Warth on September 22nd; One at Thornbury
Sailing Club, Oldbury on December 1st.
2013
One on Littleton Warth on January 22nd; Five
feeding on the tide line at Oldbury Power
Station on March 4th; One in front of the
sea defences at Severn Beach around 11:00 on
March 20th, lingered for the rest of the
day; One at Aust early morning on April 10th
with a further two on
Pilning WR at 10:00 lingering until the 11th; One north east over the
'Pines' at New Passage at 07:10 on April
13th; Four flew past Oldbury Power Station
around 11:40 on April 16th were seen to land
near the Thornbury Yacht Club present until
early afternoon; A flock of c.20 possibly
this species from Oldbury Power Station on
August 31st; One north past New Passage
around 11:45 on October 25th.

seawall off Severn Beach on February 7th; One over Lagoon
III, Oldbury Power Station at 08:15 on May
19th then on downriver.

13th; A colour ringed bird at Northwick
Warth on December 2nd around 11:00. It was
ringed in Loire-Atlantic, France with a
large yellow ring with 2 black stripes on
the left tibia, 3 colour rings on right
tibia; Green over Red over White.
